Buyer Beware Before Entering this Car Dealership’s Torture Chamber The first weekend in August, I went through one of the worst car leasing experiences in my life at Herb Chambers in Auburn, MA (ac Torture Chamber The first weekend in August, I went through one of the worst car leasing experiences in my life at Herb Chambers in Auburn, MA (acquired by Asbury Automotive Group in July 2025.) This car dealership works on a pressure system using unfair and deceptive practices to get people to sign paperwork. My car leasing experiences in the past have been decent encounters with car sales professionals. I’d contacted the dealership after reading an advertisement and being assured they had the truck I wanted in stock, I made an appointment. Upon arrival, the salesperson was unavailable, so I was matched with another sales associate. That’s when the fun begins!! The Bait & Switch Over the course of the next two hours, I was quoted leasing numbers far afield from the numbers quoted in the ad. Double the amount, actually!! After going back and forth several times, I told the sales person we are too far apart on the numbers and asked for my car keys back (they taken to evaluate the trade-in value) to which he said he couldn’t let me leave until he spoke to his manager. After asking for my keys back again, he told me “he’d get in trouble” if his manager didn’t talk with me before I left. My keys apparently were being held hostage. And here, I thought it was a rumor and an illegal practice for car salesmen to refuse to give back the keys to make the sale. Gaslighting While Held Captive The manager, Alex, appeared and reviewed the numbers while explaining the ad was for a 2WD, not a 4WD which is why the numbers differed. (See a screenshot of the ad below.) I asserted that it was for a 4WD. Finally, the manager offered a deal to which I agreed but was still much higher than the advertisement. Post-Purchase Dissonance On the drive home, and over the weekend, I reflected over the treatment I’d endured just trying to lease a truck. The browbeating, the tactics to hold me hostage, the double-talk and decided I no longer wanted the truck. Some would call it post-purchase dissonance, but honestly, I felt I’d been bullied into signing the lease. I can’t imagine what this dealership would do to a less experienced car buyer, a young woman purchasing her first car or an older person with limited income. On Monday, I called the dealership to rescind my agreement and the holy xxxx continued. I explained the situation to the General Manager, Dan, who told me he’d look into it and call back. Meanwhile, Dhimitri, the Sales Manager, called to see how everything went on Friday. I told him I wanted to cancel the deal and ended our conversation. After speaking to the GM again, I was told to work out the details to cancel the deal with Dhimitri. Apparently, “working out the details” meant something different to Dhimitri because in our subsequent phone conversation he continued to pressure me to work out a better deal because “they need to make a deal and move cars.” FINALLY, seemingly admitting defeat, Dhimitri told me to come in and he would refund the deposit and cancel the transaction. Threatening Legal Action After arriving at the dealership, I waited over 15 minutes while Dhimitri ignored me. I left, called my attorney, who called and told Dhimitri that if a refund wasn't processed by the next day, the dealership would be served with a 93A demand letter for unfair and deceptive practices. And here’s the cherry on top — Dhimitri asked my attorney if there was anything they can do to salvage the deal and make me happy! Now, he’s pressuring my attorney!! Finally, after my attorney told him that under the unfair and deceptive practice law, they would be liable for triple damages and court costs if sued. (Pay attention folks & write down this info if you’re still thinking about buying a car from this dealership!) Within 15 minutes of my attorney’s call, they finally processed my refund. Thinking of leasing a car or truck? Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. More
