No pressure. Privacy taken seriously. This was my second trip around to this dealer. The first time I was out, I was not looking to do anything other than compile a list of cars I could po This was my second trip around to this dealer. The first time I was out, I was not looking to do anything other than compile a list of cars I could potentially see out of because of my height, which anyone in my situation can attest to, is a real problem with modern car cabs. This took almost a month of my free time across multiple dealers of various makes and models. When I went in to collect data at Gerald Subaru, Paulo greeted me, I told him straight up, I need to just sit and test the cars for vision. He grabbed the keys of various models and we walked the lot and show room while I recorded my data on various vehicles. No pressure to drive or anything. It was a quick trip in and out so I could get what I needed. Comparing and researching prices, features, milage, visibility, size (for me and city manuvering) and dealer bonuses, my husband and I decided on the Subaru Crosstrek as a compromise. But there were requirements. Moon roof would have made it too low for me to fit in the car, I'm also very partial to the black and orange aesthetic. I also needed a specific trim for a safety feature. I had a budget in mind from my research and offers I had to stick to, but I connected with Paulo again and told him that I was looking for. He said he was able to find one car that met my criteria which we had seen online at another dealership through research a while back. Apparently he was able to get that same car (not that I knew that's what he was getting at the time). He did say he needed a deposit though to do it. I was hesitant. I really didn't want to make a deposit on a car I haven't driven or couldn't test drive fully yet. Paulo seemed to think it may be sold be the time I could drive out there though. So, against my better judgement I did it. For the record, I wouldn't do this again unless I was positive this is the car i was getting. Fearing the deposit may have skewed things against our favor, my husband demanded we bring his father because he researches cars extensively and can tell if something doesn't seem right in the price. Come the day I scheduled to drive one, we got to drive the very car I speced. I was happy they had my colors without a moon roof but for a test drive, I could have done any color as long as I could fit and it had the required features. Paulo was wonderful in explaining the safety features, showing us the safety design walking us through the garage. The weather was a disgusting rain / snow mix... Yes... Snow in practically may... But this really let the cars features shine. We saw how safe the braking was, how well the car handled the crazy terrain on the test track with the bad weather. How the eyesight fared in poor weather. It managed expectations very well, and helped us understand what we could expect in real life situations. It did fail one test, it hit a barricade that was designed to simulate a pedestrian. But my brother said when he test drove a 2017 model last year, it failed for him too. Expectations managed, price point and features in mind, the part everyone loves was coming up... Price. I had put down a large deposit already. So after giving my husband's father my budget, and prices for the add-ons we wanted online, calculating taxes and what not, he did his thing. The one thing that really threw off our estimates, was the cost of the dealers package they apply to every car that "you don't want". They are good to haves but absolutely inflate the price to outside of budgets, and not knowing what the costs of these items were, it really threw off our budget. For transparency these packages and prices should be posted online. If my husband's father wasn't there to negotiate, that package would have priced the car out of budget and I may have been out that deposit. In the end, a few of the extra features I wanted I couldn't get because of the dealer forced package. I'll have to find other ways of accomplishing them. Which is sad because I know the items I wanted would have had a higher profit margin for them. I ended up paying about 500 more than I had budgeted without those features and getting one upsell because the price was worth it (protip, get the base dealer maintenance package, this is absolutely worth it after pricing everything out, kudos to Gerald for putting this together) That being said, my research on Subaru showed only one major issue with the cars after a long time of ownership and going specifically to gerald subaru makes it a non-issue with their free lifetime power train warranty. I'm going to chalk up the extra 500 over budget we paid to being this a virtual cost for this extra warranty. It's worth it, even if I have to be super extra frugal for a few more paychecks. When all is said and done, Paulo offered to and let me watch him destroy my sensitive information that wasn't needed, because he knew how much my privacy meant to me. He even blanked out numbers on forms that were no longer needed and was such a stand up gentleman the entire time. If there is one, and only one complaint I had, it would be Paulo knew from our conversations we had a dog and the dealership is very dog friendly! While our dog would have probably not liked it, it would be helpful to know in the future in case we can't find a sitter for him. Maybe it would be more appropriate on the website to see that though. We were at the dealership all day, from 9:30 until about 2 and we live about an hour away. That should speak volumes about how far we were willing to go to give this dealership our business. In the end, do your research, be open about what you need, and make sure you have any estimates you received documented. They will treat you right and really do try to get you what you need. Thank you all for the positive experience and letting me get the first car I've been able to drive in over a decade! More
