This is a classic car dealer move. I called and spoke to Steve directly, but he would not honor the deal. Hilariously, claimed his warranty was a dealer “fee.” He said, “we can talk all you want but I’m not doing the deal” we had reached. This is how they do business.

Scott, here is a more complete account of my experience (which I've posted on Yelp). If you believe there was a misunderstanding, I am willing to discuss it with you.

I inquired by phone about a Santa Fe hybrid. The sales rep told me they'd want a markup on it, which did not interest me. A few days later he called me -- it's the end on the month, let's make a deal, etc. I told him I appreciated it but I wouldn't pay above MSRP for the car. He said, hang on, he would try to work it out. After the classic check-in with his boss, Steve Leveille, he agreed.
When the paperwork arrived, Steve had added a "Desert Protection Package" for almost $1000. These quasi-warranties are a classic car dealer hustle. Check this particular strain out on their website -- it is actually the kind of stuff (spraying down seats etc) that I'd rather *not* happen to my new car. Their "desert protection" is uniquely useless to me since I don't live near the dealership nor, indeed, in the desert.
I called and spoke to Steve directly, but he would not honor the deal we had made. He was uninterested, harried, and combative. I'm documenting our conversation here to give you a glimpse. First, he advised me that they don't mark up their cars (the opposite of what his rep had just tried to do -- so apparently *that* was a hustle). He said the warranty is part of their "Internet Price" (a different sales channel that had never featured in my discussions with the rep). I reminded him that we had a phone deal at MSRP. Hilariously, then he pivoted, claiming his warranty is a dealer "fee."
In the back and forth, he mentioned that his dealership makes "just" $365 of profit on selling this $1000 warranty (so now you know its real value). He said he'd waive it on future Santa Fe hybrid deliveries, but not on the 6 cars they have now.
I confirmed: you're willing to take this position (walking back your deal, and living up to every bad stereotype of car dealers) for a max of $6k in revenue, aka $2200 in profit? His answer: yes.
Bear in mind this is a car I was buying at sticker price. He repeatedly said, "we can talk all you want but I'm not doing that deal."
This is the sales manager. Or as he called himself, the boss.
