Sold Car with Major Safety Problem Our car buying experience at RHT started out well. We found a car on their web site we wanted to test drive. The salesman, Stan Hill, explained all of the features of the car and gave us ample time to drive it. We liked the car, the price was right, and we purchased it. The only hiccup is that he lied about a question I had about getting service from my own mechanic stating that my warranty would be voided if I didn’t get the service done by a dealer. That’s not true. My mechanic can perform the service as long as he uses Toyota parts and the service is done correctly. It specifically states that in the Toyota warranty booklet provided with the car. We also felt pressured by the finance manager (Jeffrey) to buy an extended warranty, trying to put the fear into us as to what might happen to the car in the future. I told him I wanted to think about it and he said I had to decide right now. I took the lowest cost warranty ($1,060) but I will skip it in the future. Unfortunately, the deal went south on the drive home that night with a major problem with the low beam headlights casting a black veil curtain affect back up on the windshield which caused it to be very hard to see the road. The windshield was black except for a narrow clear ribbon you could see through. We called Stan Hill the next day and explained the problem we were having. He said he had never heard of such a problem (hard to believe as there are several instances of similar problems on the Internet with various Toyota models.). He told us to return the car to see if it could be fixed. Later in the day via e-mail, we requested guarantees about the car being safe which he never responded to verbally or via email until three days later. Our trust factor went down at that point. We returned the car and it took seven days to fix what the RHT service advisor (Brad Burdette) called a simple adjustment. When I asked him what caused the problem, he arrogantly replied that customers don’t know that the headlights can be adjusted, insinuating that we are stupid and he is the expert. He never answered my question and talked down to us the entire time. I found him very insulting. I have worked on cars before. I know how to adjust headlights. When they returned the car to us, we test drove it again and the problem was not corrected much. It seem a little better on flat roads but little improvement on hilly terrain. We told RHT, also talking to the other Internet manager, Jimmy Dochney, but no one seems to believe what we are experiencing or take our claim seriously despite that we provided them with photographs and other documentation. They should pay us for doing research for them. They are in denial because they seem to be more interested in a sale than the customer’s safety and satisfaction with their car. Even the loaner they gave us while our’s was in the shop had a similar problem. In the end, we returned the car and were released from the purchase of this car. I don’t blame RHT totally for this problem because it has shown up on other Toyota models across the U.S.A. as documented on the Internet. It seems to be a design issue that Toyota refuses to correct because it would become a major recall. What bothered me most about RHT is that they refused to see our side of the story and did not seem overly concerned about our safety. I guess if Toyota says the problem doesn’t exist, then dealerships tow the company line. No one seems to have the courage to tell the manufacturer the truth. It will take death or injury to a customer before they take action as this is a major safety issue. We are not the only ones experiencing it. I will not buy a Toyota again any time soon if they are going to casually dismiss their customer’s safety concerns. Nor will I recommend them to my friends. I expect high quality and safety from their cars. Toyota and RHT missed the mark on this one. More
