I was worried about buying a car alone. My experience at McGrath could not have been farther from that. I went in on a Monday just to shop around and gather information. I ended spending 2 hours with Jerry, one of their salesman, and by the end had picked out a great car for me. It was not what I was expecting to buy, but after talking through options, my needs and my budget, I was surprised to find it was the car for me. I was shocked that in the entire time we spent together Jerry never once "sold" to me. He answered every question thoroughly and always listened to what I was saying and made suggestions to fill my requests but he NEVER pushed. Two days later I returned and purchased a '13 Civic and could not be more happy. Furthermore, Jerry called me after making the purchase to make sure everything was okay, and I have called several times with silly little questions and he has been lovely and helpful. The people at McGrath were a pleasure to do business with and I feel confident I got a great product at a fair price. I would send anyone there and will be back for my next automobile purchase. More

I had the worse experience there. The salesman was very nice and all, it was the powers above him that weren't very pleasant as he kept having to go back and forth every time I had a question or offered a nice and all, it was the powers above him that weren't very pleasant as he kept having to go back and forth every time I had a question or offered a price. He was more like the messenger boy than anything else. I basically spent my whole day there, talking, negotiating and what not. In the end I just couldn't and didn't want to wait anymore, I left with no car (which I traveled far for) and I had to ask four times and demand my key back. I couldn't believe it! I will never go there again just because of that. I actually became fearful that they wouldn't let me leave until I bought the car or made some kind of agreement with them. That was my experience with them. Should you chose to do business with this dealership may you have a better experience than I did. More
I walked into Honda wanting to buy my second car. I had looked online for the exact car I wanted so I decided to go in a check this car out. I told Jason what I was interested in and he really went above and beyond selling me the car for the price I wanted and he helped me get some other stuff done on the car for free! One of the friendliest down to earth sales men I've come in contact with. I'd recommend everyone I know to go check out Elgin McGrath Honda. Ask for Jason! The whole crew there overall really did a great job! I am one happy customer! As long as I live near a McGrath that is where my cars will be bought. Customer for life!!!! More

After more bad experience with dealers on the internet and one especially bad in person, we found our way to McGrath Honda. The rest was history as Chris H. stepped in and immediately was willing to get the vehicle with the price and options that we wanted or did not want. Jordan personally went to get the vehicle and it was on the floor ready for us to pick up the next day. There was a bad scratch on the hood and though it did take multiple visits, it was made new. It was great not having to deal with pain or a last moment surprise that most of us have had with bait and switch dealers. More
Three weeks ago, on a Wednesday, I took my Pilot to McGrath Honda in Elgin, with the air conditioning not working. They charged me $185.00 to recharge it. By Monday I had NO air conditioning AGAIN. They kept it for 2 days, told me that the "O" rings and hoses needed to be replaced and our extended warranty did not cover that. They charged us just under $600.00 to do that. Went on vacation and 10 days later (yesterday) I get in the car and I have NO AIR CONDITIONING. REALLY? They tell Tim that they do not blame me for being pissed off and they tell him that they do not blame him for not wanting to have to pay for the air conditioning AGAIN. They then tell him that they cannot take my car until Thursday because they do not have a loaner for me until then. REALLY? McGrath Honda, just another issue with your service. This fight is just different than the electrical fight that we had for MONTHS and MONTHS with your service advisor TJ being a total jerk to us. We screamed enough and called upper management threatening to contact Honda Corporate that you finally kept our car for a MONTH in order to find out what the problem was. If not for the Service Manager that FINALLY LISTENED to us, we would STILL be fighting about the electrical problem!!! FINALLY your service techs found the problem and seems as though it was repaired but we did not escape the feeling of DREAD of having to have our car serviced at your location. We have had trouble with the service department AND the finance department (they do not return multiple phone calls when leaving messages of wanting to purchase an additional extended service agreement). And they wonder why, when they continue to contact us on trading in our Pilot for a new one, that we do not reply. This air conditioning problem better get resolved, with no additional cost AND a reimbursement of costs to the $600 that we had to pay that DID NOT RESOLVE the issue. More

I purchased a car from this dealer in 2008. I was glad to see their price from the requested quotes from the Honda website was the lowest. When I went in to discuss the details, is when I began to have t to see their price from the requested quotes from the Honda website was the lowest. When I went in to discuss the details, is when I began to have the "car dealer" experience consumers all dread: I knew from internet research no local dealer had the model and color I wanted in stock. Of course McGrath was willing to go get it for me--for an extra $500 above their quoted price. Mind you, when you request a quote through the Honda website, it is specific to model, trim line, and color. So already they have shown that their quote was a misrepresentation. Then I am told the additional $500 is because they will either have to drive to Madison, WI or Aims, IA to get the car. Then began the obligatory push for the $500 deposit. During the "talk to the manager" phase about the loan financing, was another disappointment. I was looking to put down 75% of the total cost as a down payment. I was told by the salesperson, that such a thing was overkill. I was reminded that I could do whatever I wanted, but over the term of a loan we were talking a small difference in monthly payment. As this purchase was not an urgent need I left with no exchange of funds or purchase agreement. When I called the competitor with the most competitive price, they were indeed honoring their quoted price for the color I wanted. Imagine my further surprise, that there were six of the vehicle I wanted within 75 miles of Elgin and they were willing to get one for me at no additional cost. They were also more than willing to let me make my substantial down payment--further they revealed that a dealer's motivation for having a consumer borrow more is that the dealer gets a bigger kickback from the finance company. The lesson: it seems McGrath is living in a bygone day when the consumer cannot access competitors within seconds to see if they have been told the truth. When entering business dealings with this dealership, ALWAYS compare information and prices with a competitor. More
This is a very friendly and courteous company. I gave it a "good" overall experience instead of "great" for the following reason. When I went in to purchase the CRV-XL they showed me an EX that was in the a "good" overall experience instead of "great" for the following reason. When I went in to purchase the CRV-XL they showed me an EX that was in the showroom and was told the interior was the same in both cars with fabric differences. The car I looked at had arm rests on both the driver's and passenger's side. I picked up my car in the evening and when I got home we noticed it didn't have the arm rest on the passenger side. This is very important to us because my wife has a prosthesis in her left shoulder and needs an arm rest on mid to long trips. When I called the dealer the next day I was told the arm rest only comes on the driver's side in the XL (which doesn't make sense to me) and not on the passenger's side. Some how this information fell through the cracks when I was making the purchase. I asked what we could do to get this corrected on the passenger's side and they told me they would look into it and get back to me. So far they haven't and I certainly hope they'll be able to resolve this issue. Overall though I did have a good experience with the purchase and would recommend them to my friends. More
