On 10/14/21, I purchased a used 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe for $8613.00 from Lakeside Toyota. The body and interior were in pretty good condition, and the engine ran smoothly. I thought I had a good deal, as for $8613.00 from Lakeside Toyota. The body and interior were in pretty good condition, and the engine ran smoothly. I thought I had a good deal, as I have bought several used cars over the years. Eight days later, while driving to Slidell, the engine failed, and I had to pull over on the twin bridges, just past the St. Tammany Parish line. The car was towed to Hyundai of Slidell, who determined that the engine was not fixable and that I would need a new engine, costing from $3000.00 to $5000.00. I returned to Lakeside Toyota and was told by a Ryan Letulle that there was nothing they could do because the vehicle was purchased “As Is”. Now it’s one thing to have the AC stop working but it’s quite another thing for an engine to fail after eight days, an engine that was inspected by their mechanics before it was put on the lot. Every used car, by law, must undergo a Used Vehicle Inspection. When I returned to the dealership and asked for a copy of the U.V.I. from Mr. Letulle, he said he would get it, and I waited for twenty minutes until he returned with no copy, instead telling me that everything had been done to assure that the vehicle was safe to drive. When I asked him if it was his decision to not supply me with a copy of this report, he tried to minimize it as “It’s just a white paper with nothing on it!” I asked, “Do you mean it’s just a blank piece of paper?” He stammered something and then returned to the back, returning after another ten minutes with one page of the report, stating that a Multi-Point Inspection was performed by the mechanic, priced at $130.00. There is no information about what the results were or what service was reported. I have been assured by a person who deals with this procedure daily that an engine with problems that cause an engine to fail after just eight days is readily discovered through the U.V.I. procedure. I believe that the Santa Fe was sold to me as an unsafe vehicle, that they should take it back and that my payment should be returned to me. Everything that has been done by Lakeside Toyota since the purchase has suggested a dishonest attempt at unloading a deficient automobile and their reluctance to reveal information to me, their customer. I will never again set foot in this dealership and I would suggest that anyone who goes there looking for a used car should think twice before spending their money. More
