Details below. 14 Jetta Wagon TDI, 66k miles Pre-purchase: Sales staff was helpful, Allison in particular. Test drive: Car had a funny smell I attributed to the detailing process. Gas cap lid plunger missing so gas cap didn't operate. Rear wiper literally flew off the car during test drive. These should have been caught before the car was declared ready for test drive. Sales rep was embarrassed. A third problem and I would've walked. I spend a lot of time on the road, and needed to replace my previous ASAP, so I chose to overlook these problems in order to get a diesel that can carry all my stuff. Sale: Pretty standard. Worked with Cedric. Got compensated for the gas cap with a purchase price reduction, had to replace the wiper myself. Young woman manning the parts desk was exceptionally helpful and friendly. The car needed a wash, and that process took three hours - WAY beyond what it should have. (More on that later) Post purchase: Smell: Car had a funny smell, a combination of green/musty and detailing products. Couldn't tell whether they were together or different. No obvious source in the car. Smell has dissipated, other people don't notice it, so it's gone not just gotten used to. Accessories: I don't remember if the car had the regular and rubber mats and trunk curtain when I test drove it, but only the rubber mats were in the car when it was released to me, and I didn't notice til I got home. Drivetrain and handling: As expected, no issues. Runs quick and smooth, with 40+mpg TIRES: After getting two separate speeches about Nitrogen-filled tires during purchase... back left tire was down 5 pounds over a three hour drive. Tire has continued to leak about one pound an hour. I have to plan my work trips to go past gas stations with air pumps, and pump it up before I leave home, in order to be safe. ROOF: And now we find out why the detailing took forever. DESPITE specifically asking the sales rep about the roof drains... now that it's raining, I have two huge wet splotches in my headliner, where the car is leaking inside. That explains the long detailing time! They washed the car... saw it was wet... and then had to scramble to find a way to dry it before giving me the keys. DEALER ACTIONS: I waited two weeks post purchase to write my first email. They wrote the "tell us how we did" and I detailed everything above, except the roof (because I hadn't seen that yet). 2 weeks later - no response. 3 weeks post purchase, I called and spoke to the sales rep directly. He expressed concern, said he would talk to his manager, and they would get me an answer back by the end of the day. We are ten days past that. I have received no phone call. Yesterday (4 weeks post purchase), I called sales rep, left a message. An hour later I called the sales manager, left a message. After 24 years of command in the military, I'm pretty sure I know how to leave an unambiguous message explaining what I want to happen. A day later - I have gotten no response. I can't figure out what I'm more disappointed with - the inadequate way the car was checked out before sale, or the lack of dealer responsiveness when presented with a safety issue and a huge maintenance issue. The wiper blade was installed wrong and flew off when I operated it the first time. The tire leaks air out, and the roof leaks air in. ALL of these issues should have been caught by whomever prepared the car for sale, and ALL of them are easy fixes. There are no excuses. If I wanted this kind of car buying experience, I could've saved myself the trouble and just hit up the slimeball down the street. More
