4 visits and problem was never correctly diagnosed The charging unit to my A3 e-tron was not charging. I originally scheduled for Dec 23 and brought the car in, but was called at 5pm and told they had The charging unit to my A3 e-tron was not charging. I originally scheduled for Dec 23 and brought the car in, but was called at 5pm and told they had been unable to get to my vehicle. I returned on Dec 27 and was told that the cord from the charging unit to the car was defective. the part was ordered and took over 2 weeks to arrive. On Jan 23 I was informed that that part had arrived. I went to the dealer and insisted on trying it out. It did not fix the problem. I brought the car back on Jan 27. When i returned to the dealer I was told that they had figured out the problem and it was not covered by warranty. The service rep took me to the car and pointed to the charging port (female plug) on the car. There was a plastic part inside the port that had broken and was dangling. When rep pointed to the plastic piece (about 1/2" by 1/4") it came off. He said the part was broken, probably due to the fact that I use an after market charge unit at my place of work. this was not covered by warrant and would cost over $3000 to repair. He suggested I just continue using an after market charging unit. I left unhappy. He told me that the plastic part was part of the Audi sensing system and that the Audi charger will no longer work with the piece broken off. As I was driving home it occurred to me that I had observed the piece falling out, so any testing done at the dealer had been performed while the piece was still dangling in the port. I wondered if it would work not that the piece had been fully removed. Sure enough, when I got home, I plugged the unit in and the car charged fine. The only functionality lost now is that the charging unit does not lock into the port when the car is locked. My hypothesis is that the plastic piece was not part of the sensor; rather is was part of the locking mechanism. My conclusion is that over 4 visits, there was never a really analysis of the root cause. Also, the service rep was really quick to tell me that I am not covered by warranty - even when the problem had not been properly diagnosed. More
