Late this Sunday afternoon, I drove in from DC with my wife and young child to view a car about which I’d communicated with Peter the prior day. Was told it was available on site to view and had been used as a loaner for three weeks, most recently returned this past Friday. We arrived prepared to purchase, even at MSRP. We were passed off to another salesperson after a slightly awkward welcome. No problem - Peter had another sale in progress and let us know his colleague would work with us. The car was brought around with a dirty exterior and an interior that smelled like food and had spots of dried ketchup or something on the dash and shift lever area. The sales associate mentioned that it just takes an hour or so to clean/detail the car and they usually do this between loaning it out to folks. I’m not sure why this wasn’t done prior to a serious buyer coming to visit with a day’s advance (not a ton of time, but enough). In addition to being a bit put off by the appearance and smell, more substantively, the dirty exterior made it difficult to evaluate the car for scuffs or scratches. And it became apparent that checking the car for signs of use was more important to do than I had anticipated; the car had nearly 1.5 thousand miles registered. I recognize this is not quite enough to be classified as used by the state of MD (this number is 2k - indeed, later on, Peter was quick to point out “that’s nothing”), but it’s certainly more than was implied over the phone (to put into context, if dates are to be believed, we’re talking about the car being driven nearly 100 miles per DAY on average since it arrived at the dealership to be loaned out - and that’s assuming it’s been on loan every business day over this period). Later on when discussing price, Peter returned. My impression was that he was immediately defensive and a bit condescending, and I don’t think internalized our feedback. We ultimately walked away despite, in truth, our actual walkway price being well above the MSRP. I see that this experience seems completely at odds with many other reviews here, all of which are remarkably positive. Only to say, I don’t know what happened here. I’m not a difficult customer - will hardly ever review a product or service provider, good or bad. But particularly when making a large purchase like a car, there’s a basic professional standard of service which I’m afraid just wasn’t met today. Called and talked to Mable Matos about a specific car and she found exactly what we wanted. She texted my husband, he gave no response, she emailed my husband, again he gave no response (he doesn’t look at she found exactly what we wanted. This dealership understands their product AND they understand how to match that product to their customers. There was never any pressure and I was free to discover which car best fit my needs even tho understand how to match that product to their customers. I WILL highly recommend this dealership AND Volvo to my friends looking for a new vehicle! I spent the most time with Peter and his knowledge of Volvo cars is impressive! It's obvious his career choice is a wise one! Bruce was also very pleasant to work with and it's apparent he provides great support for his staff while keeping the customer's goals in the forefront. Sean and his "wizard's table" made the financial part of this transaction actually fun! Sean was keen to ensure that my interests were always kept first-and-foremost. Lastly, it seems to me that the team, as a whole, functions very well together. Whoever is the overall leader of this team should be aware that this is noticed and appreciated. Presumably, these people are compensated in ways commensurate with their value to your team's overall goals. (Perhaps it's time for a raise!) Now, let me know when the roadwork is completed as I don't want to drive my new car on that unfinished stretch! :) More
