I had my ‘21 Forrester serviced by my regular mechanic for a check engine light. Their diagnosis said that the first thing that needed to happen was to do a software upgrade dictated by a technical servic for a check engine light. Their diagnosis said that the first thing that needed to happen was to do a software upgrade dictated by a technical service bulletin regarding the camshaft. Since they don’t subscribe to the Subaru updates, I needed to go to West Herr. When checking in at the dealer, I was very explicit and specific that the first thing I wanted done was to do the update. I was repeatedly told that they preferred to do their own diagnosis, which would be $189. I told them that was fine but to make the update part of that. When they got back with me, their estimate that the car needed a camshaft repair, control module replacement, and the SOFTWARE UPDATE I REQUESTED ALL ALONG. Updating the software would be another diagnostic fee of $189. The other items would be ~$5K. I was told that those items needed to be replaced “based on the mechanic’s experience.” So they didn’t actually do what I asked them to do and were going to charge me twice for what I asked them to do in the first place. The service advisor, Nicole, was polite and helpful. I have no issues with her, but I do have issues with the way the dealership ignored what I asked them to do. More
