I worked with Tom Calkins both times and would highly recommend him to anyone interested in a Volvo. He is incredibly customer minded and is very good at narrowing in on your needs vs wants in a vehicle. Both purchases were quick, professional, fair and fun. I never thought I would say that about a car buying experience! More

This is not normal and was never a characteristic of the vehicle in the first 50,000 miles. Vehicle is still under warranty, but at 57,500 the warranty is near expiration. I dropped it off for a non functioning rear door lock and the mysterious driveline noise. The service tech easily swooped in and repaired the non functioning door lock. However, he was apparently not able to hear the driveline noise and the advisor asked me to leave work to drive 20 miles one way to show him. I made a very succinct description of the problem and how to hear it when I dropped off the car. I am a graduate electrical engineer and recently noticed the noise (with the radio playing, by the way). I am 49 years old and my left eardrum has been punctured and is not fully operative. Do you get the picture? I am somewhat of an enthusiast having installed headers, full exhaust systems, anti-sway bars and a handful of other goodies on various performance cars with HP's as high as 800. My understanding of mechanics is well above average. Anyway, today the clatter was not adequately investigated, and I do not have time to leave work and help the tech hear the noise which my untrained wife could hear WITH the radio on. I do not know what this noise is, but I tend to feel something is going to happen AFTER my warranty expires. I don't believe service departments earn as much on warranty claims as they do on full service claims. So, to troubleshoot my claim on a vehicle under warranty...I doubt there was much interest…when the tech can quickly grab another service ticket and make money working on the next car. Am I right? Those guys don't get paid to find problems, they get paid to change parts and fix them. Let's get that dirty little secret on the table, now. That is a great annoyance to me. I had been loyal to this dealer having purchased 2 Volvos (2011 and 2012). I did not feel a reciprocation from the service department, today. Sorry boys, I am just saying it like it is. Don't ask me to leave work so I can help the tech hear an obvious noise. He did not want to spend much time troubleshooting; he wants to change parts - make money- and move on to the next the car. This is how it works. Hunting a mysterious noise is of no interest until it breaks…I am trying to head that off. There is indeed a clatter, and it is not difficult to hear…if you want to hear it…but if it is not completely broken yet, how will the tech make any money? When it breaks after my warranty, you all will fight for my service ticket. This situation is similar to one I had a few years ago with a new SRT8. I detected a clicking sound when driving. The engineer in me decided to lay this problem on a silver platter for service. I performed many drive tests under various conditions and could advise the service department that the click can be modulated with the gas pedal…apply gas, get the click…lift the gas and the click subsides. It is not tires or brakes. The tech could not hear the problem. I HAD TO LEAVE WORK AND HELP THEM HEAR THE CLICK! I vowed never again would I do the service department's job. After driving the tech around, we rolled back to the dealer and he reported, "Its the tires." and he walked away. I was not happy. I tried to reason with them…but they ordered new Goodyear Run Flats (a waste of warranty)….guess what, the clicking was obviously still there. I then went to another Dodge dealer on Manchester road. I explained everything yet again…and they heard the noise and narrowed it down to the front differential (Jeep SRT8). They pulled it, opened it and found it be be missing a shim from assembly. Problem finally fixed. Big difference in factory service, eh? I wonder if they work on Volvo's. I think West County Volvo is adequate for routine service and changing parts on items easily diagnosed/known. I wish they were more willing to troubleshoot, but that is not what they choose to do. Be careful with that, folks. Don't go there unless your car is clearly broken. Edit: Car is now at the other Volvo dealer in St Louis (Dean team). Waiting on a right axle shaft, torque rod, and bushing. No problem found, eh? More
