Super Shady Dealership My experience with Van Horn Hyundai started through email communication from cars.com when I came across a 2014 Ford Mustang GT Convertible for sale. My experience with Van Horn Hyundai started through email communication from cars.com when I came across a 2014 Ford Mustang GT Convertible for sale. I have been searching for the right Mustang for a couple of years and came across one Van Horn Hyundai was selling online for $26,999.00. So I contacted them via email and was contacted back from Kayla Stobbs. I informed her that I would be making my way from Saint Paul, Minnesota to come check the car out in Fon Du lac, a 4 1/2 - 5 hour drive across Wisconsin. And everything was fine from there and she connected me with one of their sales team members Keith Hopkins, and he gave me a few follow up calls while I was on my way there to check up on me. So I get there at 1:30pm June 22nd, 2016 and was greeted by one of the other sales team members that lets me know Keith is just finishing up another test drive with someone if I remember right. So I wait for about 5-10 minutes for him. We greet with one another and pretty much go straight to the Mustang and take a brief overlook of it. Then he hands me the keys and says I can take it for a ride and gives me some directions around the neighborhood. So everything from there is fine. Now taking closer look around the car I can tell the previous owners put a bit of money into it but also beat it up a little. But there was no real cause for concerns except the steering wheel alignment was hanging to the left a bit. So I make my way back to the dealership and we start talking financing. I stated to Keith that I'm looking to trade in my 2012 Dodge Charger SE and looking to be around no more than $485-$495 range on a note. Which Keith replies "Okay, we'll see what we can get. Now being that my close cousin sales cars for Ford, I know that when you have a easy sell trade-in vehicle they can work with the numbers a bit better to get at the least close to what you need. Now this is when my experience with Van Horn Hyundai goes sour. They start the process of contacting lenders and after about 5 minutes Keith comes back and tells me that we're most likely looking at $520-$540 at the MAX. Now I'm like hmmmm, I've done A LOT of research and calculating even with higher interest rates on what this car should cost after taxes, and warranties and that is a bit too much. And I state to him that we got to get that down somehow. So he says they’re waiting on the banks to get back in touch. So I wait, through that process. And by this time I've been greeted by Kayla with some info and gifts for new purchasers, and I am greeted by one of the Finance managers Nik Tries. And Nik starts just trying to get more info with employment and finances, which I try to get whatever they needed as far as pay stubs and what not. This process took awhile as most people buying cars would know. Then Nik comes and states that they got a deal and give him a minute to get it printed up. Now at this moment my heart is racing because I've been waiting for the right one to come by for a number of years. Then we go into Nik's office and take a seat and he shows me the paperwork and states that the monthly payment will be $613 and some change. I had to have him rephrase it real quick because that caught me very off guard. And now I'm typically a person that is very good about the car buying process and usually would overlook everything. But for some reason I saw that total payment a blacked out mentally and started just trying to justify and figure out how to make that payment. I guess because of the drive out there and emotions of finally getting my Mustang after like 10-15 minutes of trying to justify the purchase and Nik trying to talk me into it. So I signed off on everything and took the keys and transferred all my things over to the Mustang from the Charger. And took off down the road to go home and it felt like every mile my heart was beating faster and faster, and I started having a panic attack. So I pulled over to a secluded area and started calling my girlfriend and coworkers whom was trying to calm me down and help me figure out what to do. So I went back to the dealership about 20 minutes after I left and stated to Keith that I can't keep the Mustang and we needed to retract the sale. He tried to tell me things like if he could get the dealership to make something like $600 towards the first 6 months and then I could try to refinance with a local Credit Union for a lower rate would a deal like that work for me? And being that I knew he would be able to get them to approve that, I wasn't going for that. And I brought up to him the price they sold the car to me for and the amount they gave me for the Charger and he gave me a bs excuse about new tires on the Mustang and that my Charger "appraised" for that amount. The he handed me back off with Nik. Which I stated to him that I need my car (Charger) and he tells me in a snide reply “No, that’s my car and you can’t have it back. That Mustang is your car.” And I told him no, you're not understanding me I'm getting my Charger back. Now I know a dealership can retract a sale because me and my girlfriend a month or two prior to this purchased a new vehicle that she ended up returning because of issues getting rid of her current car. So after making it clear that I’m not leaving until we figure it out, he ended up meeting me in his office and we started talking about the situation and pretty much stating to me I’m assed out. Then my girlfriend calls to speak to him. And she talked with Nik and started trying to get him to just retract the sale and he started going on about how he can’t do that because that would put his job on the line because he already did that twice that month. And I’m thinking like well if y’all conducted business properly you wouldn’t have that issue. But anyways, he wouldn’t do that. So she proposed that they buy back the Mustang and sell me my Charger back, which it's funny to me that a person in the not in the business has to propose resolutions to get something done to fix a situation. That’s where we left off that night after he said he could propose that to his upper management the next morning because we were still there 30 minutes after they closed. So that night I ended up sleeping in the Mustang in the middle off a field down the block from the dealership. But was woken up by a local police officer that was wondering why I was there. I gave him the entire run down and he stated that the dealership is known for shady deals. The officer said he used to deal in vehicle purchases for dealers and asked to see the purchasing agreement and paperwork. From that he stated that I was definitely ripped off. And he also recommended a better place to park at the local Wal-Mart down the road. I went there and slept overnight in the Wal-Mart parking lot. That morning I awoke to a dead car battery. So I called the dealership to speak with a GM but they were apparently in a “meeting” and couldn’t talk to me. And I was connected back with Nik and had him send someone out the jump-start the Mustang and made my way back to the dealership. From there I waited a couple of hours to work with him waiting for him to finish up with other customers. During that time I decided to get in touch with a lawyer to figure out what I could do to fix my predicament. Then when I finally worked with Nik I brought up a few different issues to him starting with asking why they were advertising $26,999 online and sold me the car at $29,999, and how they were only giving me $11,000 for my Charger when it was pretty good condition. The Charger at a fair market price in poor condition gets me just under $11,000. And I at the least should’ve been able to get my pay off on it which was $14,000. They gave me the run around about how they had to put new tires on to justify the price increase which I call BS on that because based on these other complaints I’ve seen about them, I doubt they put any money into it. And what do the new tires have to do with me, when I clearly came for a vehicle priced at 26,999? And he goes on to say that they’ll probably end up selling the Charger at $14,000. Now as we continue I’m just at the point where I’m ready to go home and my family wants me home so I continue on with him to work out the deal. So what ended up happening is they took the Mustang back for $25,000 and sold me the Charger back at $17,500. Which was bull; because they were claiming they were going to sale it for $14,000. So they just used this opportunity to rip me off again. And I pretty much traveled 230 miles to refinance a loan and tack on a couple thousand dollars more to it. This company Van Horn Hyundai of Fond Du lac is a complete shame to the automotive sales industry. If I knew that the Summit dealership of Fond Du lac was down the road from them I would’ve took my business to them. And the kicker about the whole stupid situation is the next day they put the Mustang back online for sale for $27,999.00. And now a month later they have it priced at the very original price that I went to get it it for of $26,999. So that pretty much lets me know that they’re going to pull the same shade over their next customer’s eyes on the same deal and they knew from the jump they were going to try to rip me off. More
Please - go buy somewhere else! Especially for trucks! DON'T DO IT, JUST GO BUY SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!! First salesman admitted that I knew more about trucks than him, so he couldn't answer any of my questio DON'T DO IT, JUST GO BUY SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!! First salesman admitted that I knew more about trucks than him, so he couldn't answer any of my questions. I had to call Ford with the VIN to get my questions answered. Then the detail department couldn't get the truck clean - they even resorted to sending the truck into town to get cleaned because they couldn't get it done themselves. Upon the day of purchase, the engine and underbody hadn't been touched. Actually, I take that back - they sprayed the underbody coat OVER 2 INCHES OF MUD. So that's up to your interpretation if you want to call that "effort." Now the current situation I'm dealing with is this MyKey business and Van Horn's support to get the situation remedied. Newer Fords have "MyKey" which is safety restrictions programmed into the key. Yes, you can turn these restrictions off IF you have an "adminstrative key" for the vehicle. I didn't learn until after paperwork was signed and keys were turned over that they only had ONE KEY for the truck and it wasn't the admin key. So now, I CAN'T TURN MY RADIO UP OVER 45%, nor can I pass people on the interstate because my truck ENGINE SHUTS DOWN AT 75MPH!! Yes, I have made arrangments with a local Ford dealership to get the admin key made, but Van Horn has stopped returning my calls after I asked them to pay for it. It's $250. But I suppose, once they have your money, customer service isn't as important. So I just say GO BUY SOMEWHERE ELSE. More
