Service after the sale is sometimes lacks quality On Nov 2014 my Highlander hybrid went in for routine 5000 mile service which included new front brake pads and rotor reconditioning. Four months later On Nov 2014 my Highlander hybrid went in for routine 5000 mile service which included new front brake pads and rotor reconditioning. Four months later the vehicle went in for 5000 mile service with a request to check the brakes because a significant braking vibration had developed during extended downhill braking. The vehicle was serviced and "road tested". The conclusion of the mechanic was that there was no problem with the brakes. Within two weeks the car was again in service in the mountainous area of PA and the braking vibration was so sever as to compromise control. After that the problem continued with normal braking. The vehicle was returned to the dealer two months after the dealership stated that there was no brake problem and received a complete overhaul of the brakes, including new rear calipers (the old ones were found "frozen"), four new rotors, and new disc pads all around. In the one month interval between "no brake problem" and a braking system interval there were no unusual driving challenges. Bottom line, the service department was negligent in addressing a request to correct a significant braking problem on the basis of an inconclusive road test. Hybrids brake electrically during mild braking and transition to mechanical on harder braking or when the propulsion battery is fully charged as occurs in extended down hill travel so a gentle test drive around town can obviously not reveal a brake problem. However, if the dealership had responded professionally to the original request from me, the customer, and inspected the brakes, they would have discovered the need for major brake work at that time. And quite possibly had the brake work in November been thorough it could have been identified at that time. I was placed in a very dangerous situation because of this negligence. More
