Mike Dobson is the gold standard for a car salesperson. He listened to us, understood our interests and needs, and responded accordingly. I never felt pressured in any way. On the contrary, I felt respected, and even cared about. He was personable in a genuine way, a too-rare genuine way in the car salesperson world, in my experience. Mike was patient as we transitioned from our interests in a new Rav-4 Plug-in Hybrid to a new Rav-4 Hybrid to a new Highlander Hybrid! This transition took nearly a week and multiple visits. We also visited competing Toyota dealerships. Mike stood alone in professionalism, style, and lack of pressuring us into a purchase. Even after our rather slow decision-making process Mike remained patient, personable, accommodating, answering all of our questions thoroughly and never evasively, and always willing to share his knowledge in helpful, but never pushy ways. All phone and text inquiries were answered in a timely fashion, even after hours or on the weekend. He was honest, giving us both positives and negatives of options. The irony is that once we settled on a Highlander Hybrid we started looking at used 4th generation ones and found one in Pittsburgh that was perfect for us. Our only regret was not buying through Mike, and we told him that, with genuine sadness. More

I ultimately walked away from purchasing a truck from Toyota of Kent due to several concerns about transparency in pricing, financing, and the condition of the vehicle. 1. Refusal to use outside credit Toyota of Kent due to several concerns about transparency in pricing, financing, and the condition of the vehicle. 1. Refusal to use outside credit union financing. This alone is not necessarily a dealbreaker, but with a credit score of 786 I was pre-approved through two credit unions at 4.79% for 2024+ vehicles and 5.79% for 2023 and earlier. Toyota of Kent initially quoted me 9% financing, and after about five hours we got it down to 6%. The final figures presented were $19,800 at 6% for 60 months with a payment of $440–$460. I repeatedly asked for a clear bottom-line price, but the conversation kept redirecting to the monthly payment instead, and the numbers presented did not appear to align with the price and rate. 2. Mandatory $599 “paint protection.” This was automatically included in the line-item summary. When I said I did not want it, I was told it could not be removed because it had “already been applied.” 3. Visible vehicle damage not addressed. The truck had a noticeable dent in the front bumper. The dealership was unwilling to repair it or adjust the price. I sent photos to my mechanic, who advised that a V-shaped dent like that may require bumper replacement rather than a simple cosmetic repair. 4. Limited independent inspection window. I requested an independent inspection and was given only a two-hour window, even though my mechanic is about 30 minutes away, which made a proper inspection unrealistic. 5. Trade-in valuation far below market offers. I received two online offers for my 2018 Honda Accord — $11,700 and $11,500 — even with a check engine light, sensor lights, and normal wear. Toyota of Kent initially offered $9,000 as a trade-in and eventually increased it to $10,500. Two days later, on 3/11/26, I sold my car to Carvana for $11,700. - I was also told by the salesperson that my vehicle had been in two accidents. I purchased the car in 2021 as the second owner and was not aware of any accidents, nor have I ever been in one. That evening I pulled my Carfax report (through Geico) and saw no accidents reported. To be absolutely certain, I also purchased an AutoCheck report, which also showed no accidents. The only related work I have had done was removing the front bumper so a protective plate could be installed under the car because the Accord sits low and I was occasionally scraping curbs. My bottom line: I have no issue negotiating price or accepting a dealership’s policies, but transparency in pricing and process is essential. Without that, I’m not moving forward with a purchase.
