For the rest please read on, my apologies for the length but when an experience is so great as to have such an impact, it must be celebrated As overwhelming, stressful and daunting a task car buying can be, especially when you add the negative connotation some people associate with a dealership, it makes what should be a good experience into something vastly different. Over the years I've dealt with dealerships that helped me form strong opinions. because of this I was fine trying to buy something sight unseen online. Something that we'd be tied to for years, without any clue as to what I was actually getting. Fortunately my wife has a great deal more sense than I do and immediately put the kibosh on my delusional strategy. The vehicle was for her as it were, she wanted to test drive a few models to see what fit best. After extensive searching online and looking at dozens of models there was one specific vehicle she saw that piqued her interest. Normally, and in my mind this is where everything was going to go south. I could only imagine her test driving something while I was working from home, walking in the door hours later with a crippling payment on a dated and questionable car that we definitely overpaid for. As somewhat of an expert in being wrong, it was shocking to find out how magnificently wrong I was. My wife went to Thomas Hyundai/Subaru in Cumberland Md for the initial test drive. Not only did they treat her with respect and kindness, they listened to her, and answered all of her questions, without a hint of condescension. She was able to test drive her 1st choice by herself, without a sales person sitting next to her like she was in drivers ed, and was able to stop home briefly for me to look at it. The dealership was exceedingly gracious and understood our situation. She initially felt the crossover was too small and decided to drive another. Johnathan Loughrie (sales team leader), again trusted her driving capabilities (she's been driving for 18 yrs) and allowed her to test drive alone, making her feel much better by suggesting she do what she had previously done, bringing to our home for me to take a look. From there she couldn't decide what to do, Johnathan made himself available to answer our questions, (quickly realizing the horrible mistake, as I began typing up the 1st of many emails) even with the numerous messages throughout, Johnathan never showed an iota of frustration, was nothing but pure class, helpful advice and the epitome of a professional. He helped us make the best decision for our family's needs. We decided on the 1st vehicle she tried and reached out to Thomas asking them if we could schedule an appt to purchase it. Johnathan worked with us accommodating our conflicting schedules, setting an appt for about a week out, so we could both be there together and get everything taken care of. That in itself would have been a great experience, but I have a tendency to "ruin it for everyone" and having several days before finalizing the sale left me alone with only my thoughts and questions. Johnathan, has the patience of a saint, received a barrage of emails each stating "I had one more question" followed by a rambling diatribe, having no less than 10 questions, many requiring detailed answers. I didn't actually expect answers to many of the most inane, as I simply cannot help myself, and it would be unreasonable to expect responses to what ultimately resembled the random thoughts of a madman, simply to buy a vehicle. Johnathan not only answered all my questions as graciously as anyone could but he replied quicky, without any hint of cynicism. Never once did he seem dismissive, or annoyed as most who do business with me do often rightfully so. Beyond how patient and informative he was Johnathan helped guide us toward a decision about purchasing new with a higher trim level vs used. I had always believed buying new was a foolish endeavor but the peace of mind we got knowing that the vehicle was backed by a warranty including scheduled maintenance, both of which the dealership would honor, as well as the knowledge that it would be serviced locally at the top-notch service center Thomas has on site, only reinforced our decision. Negotiating price was much easier with Thomas's pricing structure and the cost being listed up front. I like to haggle more than most, but felt like we were getting a better price than I could have negotiated my way to somewhere else and this was the price they were offering it at. Additionally, Johnathan continued to go above and beyond, finding any applicable discounts and rebates from the manufacturer that could be used to help offset the cost. This entire process was done through email and the responses were faster than I could have hoped. When we got to the dealership Jonathan was waiting to greet us, briefly showing us the car before we stepped in the dealership. Once comfortable, he explained all of the most important details and relevant features of the car for my wife to make sure she was clear on every aspect. It was informative, very thorough, and an invaluable part of the process helping her get comfortable before she even sat in it, this attention to detail would have gone unnoticed because nobody had ever taken time to do that for us before. Jonathan had already arranged for the financing to be ready when we arrived, we sat down with Michelle Folk the finance mgr, and she went over our options and rates fostering a relaxed environment in which to make a decision. After we decided which loan and terms to go with, and whether or not to include additional added value features to the vehicle, Michelle remained very friendly and outgoing. Never once trying high pressure sales tactics, or trying to guilt us into purchasing everything we did not want. What is normally what I'd consider the worst part in what had before always been a nerve-wracking circumstance, was - dare I say pleasant? I was unsure how to feel, I expected perhaps incredulous contempt after we signed the next six years of our lives away, but was shocked to discover the exuberance one feels when getting great value for their money, a sense that years of work helped pay for a tangible asset. My wife and I owed the happiness and relief we felt entirely to the great service provided by the at Thomas. The loan was much easier to accept because we were able to get outstanding value for our money. Even though we spent more than we had initially planned, the benefits outweighed the fact that we slightly surpassed our idea of where we wanted to end up. Being in a position that allows for a small amount of leeway with a purchase such as this could have ended badly at a less scrupulous dealership. I never once felt as if we were taken advantage of in any way. After we finished the paperwork, Jonathan had everything together for us, handed us the keys, and walked out to demonstrate everything he had explained earlier. He took time to show my wife how to use all of the features that he had described. He was not rushed never treating us like an annoyance, he took as much time as necessary to help her get comfortable with her new car while allowing time for us to ask any and all questions that came up, while looking through it. This small act was invaluable, like we weren't just a number or last name but like our business was as important to Thomas as having reliable safe transportation is to our family. We were included in the purchase process from start to finish, not in a way so as to confuse, like less reputable dealerships will. It was far and away the best experience we have had making a major purchase, by a large margin. I cannot say enough about how wonderful Thomas Hyundai Subaru is. It was without a doubt the best experience from start to finish at a dealership that anyone could have, I couldn't have written it any better than it played out. But the dealership itself would be nothing if it were not for the level of excellence exhibited by everyone we had the pleasure of interacting with at Thomas, with Johnathan leading the way. We want to thank Jonathan, Michelle, and the rest of the staff at Thomas for making our car buying experience not only pleasant, but enjoyable. It was as simple, easy, transparent, and as stress free as any large purchase we've ever made. I remember nearly every vehicle I've purchased over the last thirty years somewhat clearly, and I can't recall a a time that I would say was pleasant, let alone enjoyable. I'm pleased to say this is no longer the case. Thomas has removed the guesswork from the auto purchasing process, and the exemplary sales team has crossed off any questions surrounding where to look for vehicles in the future. If you are in the area, or from out of the area, and want a first rate experience at a dealership that surpasses any other by a margin so wide that it's almost unfair - do yourself, your family, and your bank account a favor by calling, texting, emailing or better yet stopping by Thomas Hyundai/Subaru to see Johnathan. If you read this and and go anywhere else, I won't say "I told you so" but I did "tell you so" and forewarned is forearmed, but some people have to learn for themselves.... For all of you who don't enjoy getting fleeced by a two-bit grifter, leering at your wife and daughter, before spending the next 3 hours telling you how the vehicle he's selling you has a 100% chance of exploding with the only way to prevent it being the undercoating that is ½ the cost of the car, and laughing as explains why exploding is not covered by the additional extended 3rd party warranty with the "crippling balloon deductible" that's based on "milage x your age" - there is no need to thank me. Rather, thank the team at Thomas for providing a buying experience so outstanding that it redefined our idea of what a good buying experience is. Thanks again Johnathan, Michelle, and everyone else at Thomas who made our experience so wonderful, we could not be happier to be part of the "family"!
