**update: the other dealership informed me they are owned by AutoNation, not Toyota, and the certification is a bit of a scam. Terrible experience today attempting to complete a lease buyout. Long stor by AutoNation, not Toyota, and the certification is a bit of a scam. Terrible experience today attempting to complete a lease buyout. Long story short, I was purchasing my lease at the end of the term. The dealership tried to add roughly $10,000 in extra charges, including a $5,000 "certification" fee that they told me was unavoidable. I was the only owner of the vehicle and did not need it certified. They also told me that every Toyota dealership requires this, which is simply not true. I went to another Toyota dealership and completed the buyout at the contract price, plus the applicable taxes, title, and standard fees--with no hassle whatsoever. They also told me that the financing rate I qualified for was roughly 200 basis points above the current average market rate for used-vehicle financing. They claimed they had already pulled my credit, which they had not--I had never submitted a credit application. The other Toyota dealership that ultimately handled my buyout offered me a rate that was 150 basis points lower than South Coast. Overall, a terrible and extremely frustrating experience. More
