Less than saitisfactory, but I'm 50% to blame My initial Thursday evening, 04/19 experience was good. Salesman was very professional and allowed me to explain my needs and pricing. My wife and I My initial Thursday evening, 04/19 experience was good. Salesman was very professional and allowed me to explain my needs and pricing. My wife and I explained upfront, the fist day of initial talks and test drive of the truck that as a buyer I WOULD NOT be focusing on the payment, nor the financed amount. I clearly explained that I would pay 12-14k down and would possibly have a trade in, if I felt the trade value was fair. I said to Mike, the salesman, "This is a business purchase and my focus is the bottom-line price, period, not the payment, not the total financing amount, nor the interest rate, hence I could go through my bank or finance through Ford depending on which rate was the lowest'. After test driving the first day, my wife and I decided the truck we drove was exactly what we wanted and needed for our business. We pulled the truck back in, got out, was greeted by Mike, and he ask us if we liked it, we sais yes. I then asked Mike if he could sell the truck to me for a final price of $48500. He asked how much would I pay down 12k or 14K. I said 12k and possibly would trade in my 2012 Focus if the trade-in was fair and I exlained we could go through Ford if the .09 int rate was still being offered. Mike explained that he would have to run this by management/his boss and get back to me. We exchanged numbers and I told him I wasn't in a hurry and could come back down next week if we came to an agreement. The following day, Friday, Mike called me with a counter price of 49,599. I told him I would think about that and was he able to see if I qualified for the .9 int rate, he said yes I did. I told him I would think about it over the weekend and call him back Monday. Monday I called back to exlain that I was very busy and could possibly come down Monday evening and felt we could probably come to a deal that was close, he then said that he thought there was another $1000 off his boss could give me but he would have to check, said his notes he made was not totally clear. I called Mike back on Monday evening to let him know I was tied up at work and would try to get down that way the following evening, and would bring the Focus to evaluate for possible trade in. He proceeded to tell me that he confirmed the final price to be $48599.38 I wrote it dowm. I told him I would see him tommorrow evening, Tuesday 04/24 with the Focus and explained that even if I decide trade is not fair amount I feel that we can make a deal at that final price, $48,599.38 I arrived that evening with Focaus, to my recollection, a little after 6pm. Mike was busy with another customer, but I told him I was not in a hurry and understood. He asked for keys to Focus and as I gave him the keys I discussed history of the car, etc. He asked me to have a seat on outside bench and he would get someone to appriase focus. Maybe 30-45 minutes later he came back to bench area and said they could give $2800 for Focus due to "Rebuild-Title". I countered and asked if he could give $3000. He said he would ask, and came back a few minutes later and said yes. I have a vision/reading disorder, head injury during time in Army Mortars, hence I cannot process numbers and figures unless I write them down or type them out myself, it's very embarrassing, and I wasn't comfortable sharing, so I pulled out my smart phone and began to type the numbers we had now discussed in my calculator. I asked Mike to also go over them with me as I type them out and calculate in my smart phone notes. As I typed the figures in I explained, and showed Mike every entry and detail, every amount and every calculation. EXAMPLE: "Mike your total price is $48599.38" entered amount "subtract my trade-in of -$3000.00" entered amount, then hit equals $45599.38" "So this is my price minus trade?" Mike sais "Yes". I then told Mike I would pay 14,000 down, hence my trade-in was lower than I expected. I said Mike, as I entered the figures, "Total after trade-in is $45599.38, plus TN tax, correct?", he shook his head as to say yes. I said "that total/$45599.38 plus Tx, estimated at around $3500, equals $49099.38, minus my down payment of $14,000", (as I added the 3500 and subtracted 14000 in my calculator/smart phone, ..I said, "that comes to a total estimated final price, financed $49099.38 We shook hands and I said "that's a deal". Mike said he would begin on the paperwork. (it's now around 7:30pm) Mike came back few minutes later said the cleaning person was gone for the day would it be ok to bring it back down to be cleaned, his co-worker overheard, suggested they could take off another $100, for me to have cleaned in KY. I agreed. Several minutes later, someone came to me and asked if I would like to add 5yr/100K ext warranty for 2690, I told them I really didn't know if that was a good deal, but after some thought, said yes. Around 8pm, someone came from finance and showed me to their office to sign all the paperworrk and make down payment. This is where I'm totally at fault, I should have requested more time to look over all the details and figures in the contract as it was late, I was tired, we were all in a hurry to get home and also did not share the fact I need to write or type the figures out on my phone or calculator in order to process. It's very embarassing, so as I'm scouring over the contract and figures everything appears to be correct, but unfortunately, as I discovered much later when I arrived home in KY late that night, after my wife reviewed, they were off by 10K, it's not the final price and at all what I thought. The final pricing that came in on the contract as $59074 instead of the 49K estimation figure I expected, but since I'm in a hurry and didn't retype out the figures I took the figures/numbers to be correct or what I expected to be the final price before my trade, down payment, taxes, etc. It was too late to call Mike, so I waited the next morning and called and explained that the final pricing that was calculated on the contract was 10k off from what we discussed figured. He said that the final price is the "out-the-door-price", which I had heard him use that term several times but it meant nothng to me. From the beginning I made it perfectly clear I preferred to work my deal on "final-price", total before calculating down paymnt, tax, trade-in, etc. He said he would call me back. A few hours later he called back and said that he thought he was clear that the $48599.38 was the "out-the-door", after down payment, trade-in, tax, etc. I told Mike I appreciated all his help, but it is obvious that we both were totally off on our communication of the price of this truck and I told him that I understood I would have to pay for this to be undone, but I would pay for this to be cancelled and would return the truck. He said he would start the process and get back with me. After much thought, and prayer, and being very sick and actually throwing up, because I knew I was as much to blame as Mike in this. I talked it over with my wife and we decided to retract the cancellation request, my fault for not recalling the figures and recalculating them myself. I sent Mike a text explaining that we would chalk it up as a lesson learned in making this large of a purchase. But I asked if there was some way to at least get a refund of $2690 for the ext warranty. He said it would have to go thru Ford, in 30days, I could request, but I took it as he really didn't know if they would refund. This was my 2nd purchase from Ray Varner Ford. The staff is very nice, but I think they're should be more disclosure in the "deal". During my last purchase, I asked the salesmen to write everything out on paper for me, and he gladly did so I could see in detail what we both had in mind. My biggest regret is not doing that with Mike Cox. Respectfully, Jerry L. Pennington More
