Brought my duramax truck in for emissions code for a def heater sensor with check engine light on. My scanner indicated 1 dtc code. Maria the service writer called and told me that the code was covered unde heater sensor with check engine light on. My scanner indicated 1 dtc code. Maria the service writer called and told me that the code was covered under warranty BUT the tech found 2 more codes for a different emissions issue (egr cooler bypass valve that the tech said was stuck open) that would be $4700. I authorized the warranty work and declined the out of pocket work. I brought my 2-way scanner with me and picked up my truck. I drove my truck on the freeway while monitoring the egr cooler bypass valve. My scanner showed the valve opening and closing normally. I initiated a dpf regen while driving on the freeway and the regen completed normally. According to my scanner, all is well, no dtc codes, but a few of the smog readiness lights are red pending more drive cycles to clear them. I was confused as to what the tech saw to indicate the egr cooler bypass valve was “stuck open” and why I am not seeing any problem now. There were tech notes on the invoice for the def heater diagnosis and repair BUT there were no tech notes on my invoice explaining what the tech did to test the cooler valve. So I left Maria a voicemail explaining all this and asking her to find out exactly what the tech did to determine the bypass valve was stuck open. Was an error made? Maybe a communication error and the valve wasn’t actually having problems? I never received a call back from Maria. More
