I wanted my daughters first car buying experience at a dealership to be free of the stereotypical negativity we associate with that process but that was not the case at Mitchell Volvo. The car dealership is lovely, the car was very nice and clean, the salesman and manager were extremely professional and friendly. But once my daughter said she wanted the car and committed with a deposit, our salesperson returned from the finance office to let us know he had made an error and unless we financed the car, the cost would be $3,000 more versus the “dealer discount.” First we heard of it and I spoke to owners of two other dealerships in New Britain and Danbury who confirmed that was a crummy business practice. But at this point, my hands were tied because my girl wasn’t leaving without this car. The Mitchell folks said she could just pay it off quickly which is true, but that’s not the point: they wanted to make money with a financing arrangement and took advantage. And they tried to tell us that the extra $3k made the price the market value for the car but according to NADA and KBB, that was not the case. There were some other tactics that I knew enough about to decline: engraving the VIN for a fee, GAP insurance, warranties. I was so hoping for a more honest and positive experience but hey, I get it, they need to make money. I just didn't want it to be at my daughter’s expense (literally). Silver lining: she learned several life lessons that she will be aware of for the next time. More
