I am very sorry that you feel that way, unfortunately taxes are something that we cannot change. Did you show the title for the trade when you originally made the deal and explain that you did not have any legal ownership of the trade vehicle? Normally when someone sells or trades a vehicle they actually own it. Massachusetts does allow a tax-free transfer between family members (using a gift letter in those cases) but unmarried cohabitants do not qualify under the law. Adam Owens Herb Connolly Automotive

Adam, I understand you have no control over taxes. Your employees however are responsible for providing accurate costs to the consumer, including being knowledgeable about the tax laws for various situations. I explained, more than once, that I did not own the vehicle being traded in. On Monday, a full 48 hours before I came to pay for the car, I met with the financial manager. He even mentioned the gift form at this point and that my girlfriend would need to bring the title for her car the following Wednesday. So the finance manger knew the trade-in was not my vehicle, and I had communicated earlier to the salesperson that it was my girlfriend, not an immediate family member, that owned it. The onus is on your employees to listen to the consumer and do their job correctly. Instead they did nothing between Monday and Wednesday. I had a signed contract, including the listed fees, taxes, etc. How is it my fault that the finance department made an error? Can you imagine purchasing a product at any other business, paying the price on the price tag only to be stopped on your way out the door and told you owe additional money? Any other business that misprinted a price would do the right thing and honor it. Your dealership had all the relevant information as to ownership of the trade-in, so saying "we cannot change" taxes is a poor excuse to cover your employees' mistakes. How can future customers trust your employees not to change the price at the last second?

The BBB facilitated communication between the dealership and myself, eventually resulting in a satisfactory solution. The dealership refunded the additional sales tax charge that was applied at the end of the transaction. This effectively matched the costs to the original contract.
