I brought my 2012 escape in with random warning lights on the dash. They would turn on, then go off. When it was happening the turn signal indicators on the dash would not work. Also, the A/C compressor di the dash. They would turn on, then go off. When it was happening the turn signal indicators on the dash would not work. Also, the A/C compressor did not engage when the warning lights were on. I left the vehicle with them the 23 of October 2023. They diagnosed it as a bad Smart Junction Box (SJB) and bad battery. They ordered a SJB replacement and as of December 8, 2023 (46 days) it still had not arrived. They reported that they were waiting on Ford and had no information as to when it would arrive. I suggested purchasing a used one and they agreed. I purchased a used one and delivered it to the dealership on Dec 13th. On Dec 21st they told me: "It is ready. It hasn't acted up again, but if it does the next step is to look at the instrument cluster. We will be here until 6:00." This was the first mention that the instrument cluster could be causing the issues I was experiencing. I picked up the vehicle that evening and immediately noticed it had the same exact symptoms as before. I had been without our primary vehicle for 59 days and it was in exactly the same condition; despite $800+ dollars spent on the SJB repair. It was a Friday night that we picked it up; but I did text them about the issue on Saturday. I did hear back from them that day, but due to the Christmas holiday was unable to have them work on it until the 26th. So I did research online about the instrument cluster for this specific year and model Ford Escape. I found a YouTube video about the EXACT same symptoms on another 2012 Ford Escape. The mechanic detailed his diagnostics resulting in fixing the problem by resoldering the wire connector of the instrument cluster circuit board. I sent the link to the video to the dealership and explained that I believed they had misdiagnosed the problem to begin with and felt a partial refund was in order. They told me that the SJB had errors in diagnostics so it needed replacement. However, watching the diagnostics done in the video it is very apparent that the SJB and the Instrument Cluster are interdependent and communications flow through both. It is my opinion that the errors were being caused by the, what will soon be obvious, failed Instrument Cluster. They asked me to return the vehicle for more diagnostics. This time they offered a loaner car, so I took my vehicle back to them on Dec 26th. They eventually determined the cluster needed to be replaced and I told them I wanted to send it for repair to Circuit Board Medics. They got the cluster pulled on January 9th 2024. I suggested they send it to Circuit Board Medics for repair and I would call it all even. Their reply was that they did not have an account with that company. So, I picked it up on the 9th and shipped it out myself. The cluster was returned to me on January 17th, repaired and with a 1-year warranty. It cost me a total of $200 plus shipping. I delivered it to the dealership on the 18th and was able to pick the car up on the 19th. Everything has worked perfectly since the 19th. Today is January 23rd and all seems to be fixed now. This kind of issue appears to be a known problem on this model Escape and on Ford Focus as well. I found 5 reviews about the same issues on the feedback of Circuit Board Medics. I was disappointed in this Service Department for the length of time it took and for having to spend $1,000 to fix something I am convinced I could have had repaired by Circuit Board Medics for $200 if I had been informed that the instrument cluster could have been the real problem. I was also disappointed that I had to constantly ask for updates over the course of this 88-day ordeal. I will not be using this Service department again. More
