My wife and I have purchased vehicles from Handy Toyota since 1978 (ten in total). I can honestly say that we have never had an unfavorable outcome in any of our dealings with them, either in purchases or since 1978 (ten in total). After leasing a 2009 Toyota Tacoma from Handy's with success in 2009, I looked forward to buying the truck with financing arranged through Handy's. Unfortunately, it appears that the same level of servi success in 2009, I looked forward to buying the truck with financing arranged through Handy's. Unfortunately, it appears that the same level of service delivered when shopping new does not match the level of service once they have their hooks in you. As an aside, the sales rep (Tom Young) got my name wrong for the first two years of our three-year lease. Whatever, I don't have an easy name. But you'd think that would be kind of important since they send birthday cards and such. This should have been my red flag. For my most recent visit, I called Sam in Finance a couple of weeks ahead of time to talk over financing. After not hearing back for two days, I called again and finally got Ben. He made financing sound easy with favorable rates around 3.5%. Just come in, he said, and we'll fix you up. He sent an online credit app which I promptly filled out and returned (my credit score is near 800 so I'd think that would be another reason for good service). As the lease-end neared, I called Sam to arrange a time on Thursday, May 24 since that was when I had my final Service check arranged. He said that would work to finalize the paperwork as the lease was coming to an end - he said I may get a call from Toyota which I did. He also said rates were good - around 2.99%. I said I wanted my truck to have a once-over before closing on this deal and he said fine, we could do this thereafter. Again, I made the appointment at Handy's Service for Thursday, May 24th, told Sam over the phone and ALSO left a voice mail with the information with the exact appointment time. The morning of May 24th, I left yet another voicemail for Sam letting him know I'd be in St. Albans that afternoon so be ready. [NOTE: His voicemail says nothing more than "Sam" followed by a beep. No greeting, no announcement if he's in or out of the office.] When we arrived, I dropped the truck at service then went to find Sam. Found Ben instead who said Sam was out (this was about the third time I was given this excuse for Sam - is the guy a part-timer?). Fine, Ben is the Finance backup so no need to wait for Sam. We told Ben that we wanted to finance through Handy's and asked what he needed to make it happen since it sounded easy and we had a big check ready. He said he just needed about a half hour to prepare. So me, my wife and 2-year-old son went for a walk. Ben ran across the street to catch us and report that interest rates were 3.99%. Seemed odd in this era of historically low finance rates and considering my credit score, but we were in a pickle. There was no other choice since we banked on earlier conversations being accurate. We asked Ben again if there was anything he needed like a cashier's check and he said no and went off to finish his paperwork. We eventually returned, got the truck from Service, and visited Ben. Ben said: "Can you come back tomorrow to do this?" Ben went on and one about how he has to deal with two shipments coming later in the day and he had no time for us. How this was my problem was unclear. Now, I live in Burlington about a half hour drive (i.e. quarter tank of gas) away. We made it abundantly clear that we were coming that day and our child was starting to get cranky. I told Ben to figure it out. Clearly someone was pulling his strings as he came back after a few minutes with an odd question: "Do you have a check right now?" This despite our earlier conversation in which I said I was bringing the money, the fact that my wife asked first thing when we arrived if he needed a cashier's check or our regular check, and my reiterating how we were putting a bunch of money down. In fact, I even told him we could buy it outright but wanted to finance some of it. Another couple of minutes and he said he didn't know how he could do it that day because Sam was out. I told Ben he had a choice: he could talk to the Sales Manager or I could talk to the Sales Manager. It would not be pretty if I did it. Somehow, miraculously, this worked. Ben drafted up the paperwork and we got it done after another half hour. To give credit where it's due, Ben was apologetic and ultimately managed to square us away. However, it was not without a lot of heartache and high school back and forth. And what's with the excuses? I had zero care about what else he had to do. Fact is, if we walked out of that dealership without signed papers, we were bringing our money elsewhere. Here's another fact: there is no way I will drive all the way up to St. A for a replacement vehicle to our 1995 Geo Prism. Again, everything is peachy until you already own a vehicle, then you're second-class freight. More
