The subject vehicle of this review is a 2007 Toyota Camry which has in excess of 213,000 miles. The vehicle owner came in for an extended coverage program initiated by Toyota which addresses excessive oil consumption. The dealership performed repairs for this program. The owner of the vehicle was provided with a no rate charge rental vehicle during the repair process. It was conveyed to the vehicle owner during this visit that the water pump was leaking and that the battery failed a load test. The owner declined these repairs. The vehicle displayed indicator lights after it was picked-up from these repairs. The owner was advised that the symptoms as described are consistent with a battery failure the replacement of which had been declined. The vehicle’s battery was subsequently replaced by a third party. The owner later called indicating the lights were back on after the battery was replaced. The dealership offered to perform a no charge review of the work with a no rate charge rental vehicle provided. The dealership determined, after several hours of diagnosis, that the failure is internal to a computer control unit for the skid control. Estimate for repair is $2085.18 installed. The dealership’s review involved both diagnosis of the condition and full review of the wiring harness input to this unit in order to verify whether or not we had mistakenly damaged these components. We did not damage these components. The customer was advised of the findings. She had no interest in listening to the explanation aside from wanting repairs made at no charge. As the only charge the dealership is guilty of in this instance is that of working on an older vehicle, we are not in a position to make a goodwill repair in excess of $2,000. It should be noted that we spent several hundred dollars between diagnostic labor and rental vehicle value in the course of making an earnest effort at quality control review and diagnosis. The vehicle owner has appealed this case to the President’s Office at Toyota National Headquarters. The President’s Office concurs with the dealership’s position and did not offer the vehicle owner any assistance regarding this matter. -Respectfully- Joe Luneau Handy Toyota
