Duval Ford responded

On 5-31-16 Mr Carl Kretzer had his 1992 F-150 towed into Duval Ford stating that the vehicle had died while driving. The customer noted that he had replaced a PCM ( powertrain control module ) with an aftermarket part about a year ago. Upon diagnosis we found that the truck had a burnt distributor rotor and a cracked distributor cap. The customer was advised that we must start with these simpler and obvious failures then move forward. The customer authorized the repairs, the parts were replaced and further diagnosis was made. It was during this time that we also found signs of possible distributor failure but the customer declined and requested that we replace the distributor driver module and a new aftermarket PCM. We did install the customers distributor driver module from a spare part that the customer had on hand but with no success at repairing truck. Mr Kretzer continued to insist that we replace the PCM that he replaced a year previous but we declined based on the fact that there were no codes or evidence of a PCM failure but visible evidence of a potential distributor failure. In the end the customer payed our bill of 328.49 ( which was only for the cap, rotor and labor to install - no diagnostic fees were charged after several days of working on and inspecting the truck ) and towed truck from our dealer. At a later date the customer called the dealership to notify us that he had performed repairs and inspections himself on the truck. In the end Mr Kretzer contends that his replacement of his aftermarket PCM with a new aftermarket PCM is what repaired the truck. The customer said that he wanted to state his disappointment that we would not just replace the parts he wanted regardless of our findings. The customer was told that we were glad that he got the truck running but we did re explain that we do not replace parts at a customers expense without diagnostics leading to or confirming there failure.
