Hello. I started looking for a new car eighteen months ago. It was an arduous journey, though it in no way can compare to Steve McQueen escaping from a Devi I started looking for a new car eighteen months ago. It was an arduous journey, though it in no way can compare to Steve McQueen escaping from a Devil’s Island prison in the movie Papillon. I started with thinking of all electric car, but knew I never wanted to own a Tesla. ( I am sorry for the American’s who have to work for Musk. Maybe a more responsible human (or even chimpanzee) could take over the company (maybe all his companies) and make the world great again. (Sorry, I digressed. But it may not be the last time I do that in this review.)) Electric was kinda tough with not having my own charger but it was kinda crazy expensive to have it installed in a condo. (That’s another story.) But I hung onto the electric idea…I was looking at the Mustang (great car!) and Ionic 5 and then gave up. I thought about the Prius…and then plug-in hybrid and then we were going to move to New York ( I have seen their subways and what a great mode of transportation! Who needs a car?! And did you ever see the movie Warriors? Even gangs can use it which is much more environmentally friendly.) Okay. I know, you’ve got to get to work so let’s wrap this up. I am a big fan of Consumer Reports. The non-profit one. Lotsa companies and websites call themselves consumer this or that, but there is only ONE CONSUMERREPOTS.org!) Best reviews EVER. And they really liked the Toyota RAV4. After a month of studying, I chose the hybrid model. But how to buy one without having selling my heart and soul and lotsa extra cash to get one. There was a GM Saturn we bought back in the 80’s…without having to negotiate a price. All the costs were upfront. It was like socialism that worked. That was fun!) I used Consumer Reports to help pick the car, and come up with a ballpark price, and then tell me who had the car I wanted. So I contacted many Toyota dealers and told them what I wanted with no extras and please give me a price. Of course they all said to come in and talk to them about the add-ons, which are all negotiable, and then the sales manager would tell me three hours later what the actual cost would be… I am exhausted just thinking about that. Driving around in LA traffic (lotas fun there!) to sit in a showroom for hours to negotiate a price… I would tell them on the phone, “Please give me an out the door cost.” They would say, “We don’t want you price shopping.” I said, “When I buy a refrigerator, I find one that has the bells and whistles [actually bells and whistles on a fridge are not a good idea] and then find out who has it and how much does it cost. So please, please tell me what I will pay.” SPOILER ALERT—the is review is about to end! One company, just ONE company, gave me a fully-disclosed, out the door price. And the company was…cue the bagpipes!...DHC TOYOTA OF TORRANCE. On behalf of the Academy, I would like to thank my mother for telling me about Consumer Reports. And my father for sharing his DNA.
