We purchased a used 2005 GTI for my son recently. It is a fun little car, and he loves it. We had 2 occasions to perform service, and both were good experiences. On the first, we were also notified of some VW warranty work that was performed without any additional cost. Had we used our regular mechanic, we would not have even known about this. In the second case, Boardwalk quoted work on the engine that was about the same price as other non-dealers. So, it made sense to have the work performed by those best trained on the VW cars.
