Hey prospective customers of Beaverton Hyundai Used Cars, I don’t often leave reviews, and try to leave more positive ones rewarding good service than negative, but I feel compelled to let prospective custom I don’t often leave reviews, and try to leave more positive ones rewarding good service than negative, but I feel compelled to let prospective customers of Beaverton Hyundai Used Cars know of my experience and how to protect themselves. Sorry for the length, but I’ll try to be fair and accurate here, and am willing to follow up with anyone who wants more details. My wife and I visited the lot on 10/22/20 at about 7pm and she test drove a 2015 Jetta that she really liked. We worked with a rep, Keegan, who was new to the company, but was great to deal with. Any used car we buy has to be checked out by an independent mechanic of our choosing, as I think is fairly standard practice, so I asked if this was possible, and was referred to Travis Taylor, Keegan’s manager on duty. Travis then told me that the car could not be taken off the lot, though my mechanic could inspect the car there. He ran through a prepared speech outlining that their dealership pre-inspects all their cars, that they wouldn’t even have a car on the lot unless it was solid, etc., and also it’s not typical that potential customers ask to have cars outside inspected. Travis also mentioned that the car was actually owned by Damerow Ford (this dealership and others are all under the same corporate ownership). We left that night intent to find a mechanic who could at least check the car out on the lot for us. The next morning I called 4 local VW mechanical and they all said they’d need the car in their garages so to use their equipment and racks to fully inspect the car. Two of them further advised me to be wary of any dealer that wouldn’t allow such an inspection. In the middle of these conversations, I called Keegan at the dealership and asked him to petition Travis to possibly let me take the car to get it inspected, and he told me he’d get back to me on it. At around 3pm, I drove to Damerow Ford to see if I might get permission from the owning dealership to get the car externally inspected. At that time, a rep at Damerow informed me that the car had sold to someone else at 2:30pm. Disappointed, when I inquired, he informed me that Damerow wouldn’t have had any problem with me taking the car to be externally inspected, and that it was commonly done. At this point, I became quite disappointed and frustrated that we missed out on the car due to having been given misinformation by Travis. I then drove to Beaverton Hyundai Used Cars, and was not able to meet with the Travis, but spoke to Ali, his manager. I informed Ali of my side of the story, and he was initially dismissive, saying “Well, the car’s sold now- why don’t you take a look around the lot…”. I let him know that if both dealerships had a “no external inspection” policy, I’d have no problem or reason to complain, and that I fully understand their position of “first-come, first-served”. My problem with this was that if I would have known that the owning dealership’s policy was to let me have the car inspected, I would have done so first thing in the morning, and then had the chance to buy the car first. Ali then said that their dealership’s policy was to let buyers take the car offsite to manufacturer’s dealership garages, but not “mom and pop” 3rd party garages. When I told him that Travis made no mention of this, we went back and forth for a while, with him initially dissembling and making some excuses, but eventually coming to a place where he admitted “My guy didn’t correctly state our policy, and I will have a talk with him about it”. The episode ended positively, with our discussing some other options on the lot, but with me coming away with some concerns about wanting to do business with Beaverton Hyundai Used Cars. My advice to prospective customers is to find out who owns the specific car you’re interested in, and deal directly with that dealership with any questions and negotiations. Thanks for reading. More
