My wife just drove home in her new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe, smiling all the way. The car she chose is great, no doubt, but the experience we had buying from the dealership, Honda of Abilene, was -- actu Coupe, smiling all the way. The car she chose is great, no doubt, but the experience we had buying from the dealership, Honda of Abilene, was -- actually -- pleasant and painless fun! This has to be one of a few top-tier dealerships in the whole west and central Texas markets, possibly the state. I've purchased cars from high-volume dealers in the D/FW area but didn't get nearly the same response or sense of devotion to my cause. The only better car buying experience than Honda of Abilene would be the Internet: name your price, and have it delivered FedEx on a day you are not at home -- your car the way you want it, no sales people or pressures involved! But, I guess we would miss the opportunity to help hard working people like these provide their services and guidance, which only give you greater appreciation for the super cars from Honda. We first met Honda of Abilene last summer as we dreamed of getting a new (another) Civic, but in the distant future. As luck would have it, Eric Van DerVlist showed us what he had to offer that day, then he kept us "in the loop" and saw us through our decision-making maze until mid-Feb, 2014. We were making the requisite shopping trips from one brand to another this month, but it was largely Eric who brought us back to Honda of Abilene. (Another dealer, different maker, almost had us, but even he bragged on Eric and the Honda guys who we were about to see the same day!) Eric came off as genuine. He was patient and sensitive to our input. He LISTENED to our confusion in order to help us make a decision. Moreover, Eric participated and informed without ever getting in the way. Eventually, we could trust his personal opinion -- it mattered to us, which helped us move from the Civic to the Accord. (Sure, he mentioned his little girl a couple times in the process, but only after we first brought up the subject ourselves, the mark of a true professional! lol) The Accord coupe, packaged with a sporty splash or two, was a pleasant, but unexpected twist -- perfect for us. The financials fit our budget. The numbers guy, "Billy Michael Jackson", was more than accommodating and honest (he actually waived us off a multi-hundred dollar add-on we didn't need), and he did his job with no sense of desperation (i.e., no commission on the sale). Billy patiently explained the legal jibber-jabber, warranties, packages, and accoutrements until we understood. (It was all good news.) Everyone pointed to manager Shane Davies for final commitments, who came out to assure us several times that the trust had become mutual, and he would build us the best package Honda finance would allow. We chose one out of the six financial package possibilities he presented, which was not their super-tempting-out-of-the-park best offer, but the one that still makes us glad we were allowed to pick for ourselves. Our "drive-away take-away" from the Honda of Abilene car buying experience was simply this: "THIS is how it should be done!" Thanks Honda of Abilene for a pleasant experience in buying a great automobile. The memories will help greatly as our payments start to roll in! See you every 3,000 miles (To the reader: only because of our lifetime maintenance agreement oil and filter change.) More
