When you add too much oil, the excess oil will go towards the crankshaft, and as the crankshaft rotates at a high-speed, the oil is mixed with the air and 'aerates' or becomes foamy. I have 2 priuses and newer checked oil levels after service till I've heard another customer complaining about his service and oil fluids not being top off, then I check my levels after service and of course they did not feel them up and overfill engine oil way to much.
