On my wish list - it would have been nice to have a loaner and short of that it would be nice if Uber rides were covered by BMW, especially for longtime customers - I'm on my fourth BMW in a row. Also, Cesar was good enough to let me know before the work began that the faulty hose would cost around $250. But I was shocked to learn that my overall cost at pickup was more than $900 owing to more than $600 in labor costs. Not that the mechanics don't deserve it, just that if you're letting me know what the parts cost before work begins, why not also let me know an estimated labor cost too so I'm mentally prepared? Sales rep Johnny Ruiz was very professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. He proactively found an unsold vehicle matching most of my spec option requests on a ship coming in from Germany, and I drove to S and knowledgeable. He proactively found an unsold vehicle matching most of my spec option requests on a ship coming in from Germany, and I drove to Santa Monica to put a deposit on it and lock it in as being spoken for. The dates of delivery are never assured, given the vagaries of sea conditions, crowding at the port, and availability of drivers of delivery trucks. He told us an ETA of a date almost a month in the future. When he entered the office of his manager, however, the manager blew his top. The office was about 12 feet from where we were sitting in the echo chamber that is the dealership. Through the open door, we heard the manager scream at Johnny for giving us an ETA that the manager deemed too soon based on unknowable and potential issues. "You can't tell them that!" he screamed. "That's an outright lie!" The manager then exited his office and walked a few steps to where we were seated and in his best 'barely controlled anger' voice asked when we thought the car might be delivered. We told him, and he bellowed, "Whoever told you that flat-out lied!" Everyone in the dealership was looking; I was mortified. Then the manager started to aggressively ask me questions and took a tone with me when I was answering calmly and honestly. He wasn't mad at me; rather, he was just so worked up that he couldn't speak like a normal person. I had to use my soothing, reassuring voice to calm him down, as if he were a toddler. It was surreal. Never had I seen such grossly unprofessional conduct at *any* business. I'm still in shock. That the manager would go to such lengths to humiliate the sales guy in front of all the other employees and current and prospective customers is beyond outrageous. Finally the manager calmed the eff down and returned to his office and processed our deposit. Here's the punchline, though: the car ended up arriving a few weeks *before* Johnny's original ETA, so Johnny actually *was* right all along, and the Angry Police Chief cartoon that is the manager was wrong. Side note: when I picked up the car, I drove a few blocks away to order a pair of glasses. I happened to mention the new car, and another customer in the store said, "As long as you didn't get it at Santa Monica BMW, you should be fine." The customer used to work there and said that the dealership had a very bad reputation, and its low sales numbers endangered the dealership's status with BMW. Five stars for Johnny; zero stars for the manger and overall cringe-inducing experience. More
