Post sale behaviour unworthy of the MINI brand I generally seek to provide a fair and accurate review of good experiences and tend to avoid noting down the mediocre ones. Having read a good number I generally seek to provide a fair and accurate review of good experiences and tend to avoid noting down the mediocre ones. Having read a good number of the five star reviews for Mini of Edison I felt confortable travelling out of state to possibly conduct business with them. On their site and on Yelp, they reference a 4.5 Star overall rating. Due to this rating and my experience; I feel compelled to write a review of my experience as a cautionary tale to other prospective MINI owners. As an avid MINI aficionado, in my opinion, the post purchase experience with MINI of Edison is not in alignment with the expectation befitting a premium brand. In fact, the experience is very reminiscent of the tactics often used by dealerships whose first priority is to maximize every penny at the expense of fulfilling their written commitments. Before I detail my experience, let me start by saying the overall purchasing experience with Jacob was enjoyable. We corresponded for several weeks until I had the opportunity to visit the dealership. In person, he was very patient and engaging as we went through our evaluation of three possible used vehicles and the ultimate decision to purchase. The dealership has good selection of vehicles and offered a very competitive price. In the end, the decision to buy or not buy hinged on a $325.00 Registration/Title Fee. I ultimately agreed to pay this out of pocked knowing a good portion of the fee would be refunded as my registration had been recently renewed and the plates would be transferred from my trade in. Since the vehicle was purchased in NJ and was going to be registered in NY, the dealership would be handling the transfer of my plates. Upon receipt of my registration, I saw the motor vehicle fees were $65.00; therefore a good portion of the fee would be refunded. Furthermore this is stated on the Open Road Auto Group bill of sale, in section 15 Title and Registration Fees: “These are the fees charged by the State of New Jersey or your state of residence for the title and registration for your vehicle, any additional paperwork necessary to process your title and registration, and where applicable for transferring the title of your trade-in. These fees may be estimated. In the event the actual fees charged by the State are different, Dealer will refund any overcharge to the Customer in the ordinary course of business. In the event of an undercharge, Customer agrees to pay underestimate to Dealer”. In my experience purchasing over 15 vehicles, this has always been the case and did not anticipate the response detailed below. I contacted Jacob regarding a refund of the balance of the fees and courteously advised he would look in the matter. He called back and advised the $325 was “flat fee” as the title and registration was outsourced to a vendor. I disagreed with this assertion and asked to speak with his sales manager. When this gentleman called back, he also asserted it was a “flat fee” for this service. I advised if this was indeed the case, they should engage another vendor as their cost of $260 for this service was astronomical and a disservice to their customers. Ultimately the sales manager agreed to send me itemized cost to validate his assertions. A day later I receive an email with the itemized costs which break down as follows: $65 MV FEE and $55 Alpine DMV Service Fee along with a note citing $205 credit back to the consumer. The person who sent me the email stated the refund would be processed “ASAP”. After a week had passed, I inquired once again via email to the status of the refund. The email response advised the check had been mailed out “the day before”. Another week has passed and still no check. I reached out to Jacob (my third effort to secure my refund) and have not received a response. This leads me to conclude the following. Lying to customer is an acceptable course of business; the terms and conditions of the sales contract hold no value and finally the hope that ignoring my request will make the situation go away. I encourage all prospective buyers to question and understand the fees being charged. There is no reason for customer to subsidize this dealership’s coffers by not requesting an itemized breakdown of your “Registration/Title Fees”. You might find monies owed back to you. Getting the actual refund is another matter. Furthermore, MINI of Edison only posts positive customer testimonials. This review was posted on their site yet does not appear for public view. More

Be careful when talking to finance Manager!!!!!!! So. About 3 weeks ago I decided to stop by this place last minute, on a Saturday with couple of hours before closing. We found a car my daughter was So. About 3 weeks ago I decided to stop by this place last minute, on a Saturday with couple of hours before closing. We found a car my daughter was very happy with. It was a little challenging to get the approval but it finally happened. Things took an ugly turn when we (4 of us all adults) Walked in to the manager's office to sign the contract. The young man Manager said " I have the payment information for you" WITH THE WARRANTY THE PAYMENT IS GOING TO BE $344 a month. That's exactly what he said. HE NEVER SAID the warranty was an additional $3000 dollars!!!! He just added it without asking us, the contract was already put together for us to sign. 4 ADULTS 4 WITNESSES he never said it was additional charge. Usually dealers who respect customers will ask you if you want to add the warranty or not. They will let you know what the payments are and suggest to add the warranty and with a calculator on hand they will let you know the new monthly payment. Since it was so late and we were tired and he was talking about how Great the car and the extra services they offer was we didn't really wanted to drag the deal any longer. We just wanted to get out. We called back on Monday morning, I questioned him about the charges that we never agreed to and his answer was "WELL IT WAS HARD TO GET YOU APPROVED, WE KINDA DID YOU A FAVOR". A favor??? By adding extra 3k without telling me? He said there was nothing he could do because the deal was sent. Also, I talked to another manager named Bill and he was even worse, asked me to go see him on Friday when in reality he wasn't even there. Ridiculous. Oh people!! The other lie was... They charge for reconditioning the car $999 bucks. Hey a used car is the dealer's responsibility to clean up anyway, but they want YOU to pay for it. This young man even told me the car had new tires like if I was dumb and didn't know how to check that... And guess what!!!! No new tires in the car. This place is a joke!!! BE AWARE OF THE SCAM OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY, don't make the mistake I made of not asking!!! They will WORD IT in a way you don't realize you're about to pay for. Will never Recomend this place. We have been treated exceptionally well by Dawn Morgan. The finance director Jeff Berger kept in mind about a few of our concerns and handled the pricing based on that. Will be happy to shop at them again. More
ask about non declinable fees on used sales BEFORE you go! Very nice facility, very nice staff, our salesperson Nadir was very very nice, (don’t forget to stop in and try the free coffee machine in the lounge Very nice facility, very nice staff, our salesperson Nadir was very very nice, (don’t forget to stop in and try the free coffee machine in the lounge) but, don’t expect to buy one of their cars for the price that you see on their website, because it seems at this Open Road owned dealership it just doesn’t work that way. I saw a very nice car on their site advertised for $ 31,895. I drove an hour to see and drive it; I loved it; offered to pay the advertised price in full and buy the car; but no, Mini of Edison doesn’t work that way. The advertised price doesn’t include the glass etching fee of $ 199 ( i could live with that, a few nickel and dimes won,t kill me) It also didn’t include the $ 599 doc fee ( a little high on the industry standard, I have bought many cars, but still, that was a nice coffee machine so I’ll give them that one too) But then, there was the $ 1000 fee for writing a check for the car, yes, you heard me right, instead of financing the car through “ their” bank, I wanted to pay in cash, and Edison of Mini charges you $1000 more for that. Yes folks, on most of the planet you get a discount for cash, but not at Mini of Edison. But, get ready, they weren’t finished with me yet.........I also needed to pay them a $ 995 “re-conditioning”fee ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE!!! You know, those used cars are a mess, and it costs a lot to run them through the car wash, ALMOST A GRAND, if I can still add after all this emotional strain. So yes, I loved the car at $ 31,895,(The price on their website) but when I wanted to buy it, the price somehow became $ 34,688.WOW, wish I had that calculator at my office, i’d be the fastest growing privately held auto sales chain in the NJ/NY AREA too! You really don’t have to be a mathematician for that do you Mr. Morais. Maybe everyone who has purchased a car from an Open Road owned dealership should check that financing contract over closely to see exactly what they did pay for! Best wishes, and for your own good, shop elsewhere! More

Make sure you ask for a sales agreement. We were working with Dawn Morgan who after some back and forth gave us an out of the door price. We did not receive an itemized sales agreement but in We were working with Dawn Morgan who after some back and forth gave us an out of the door price. We did not receive an itemized sales agreement but instead a somewhat vague covering note to the Carfax detailing what we owed - some of which was 'to be financed'. During the process we made it very clear we were happy to consider the dealer financing if it was the best price but had our own. Once they produced a poor financing rate we said that we would use our own bank and Dawn inflates the car price by $1k from nowhere. At no point had we discussed our deal being contingent on dealer financing before this point. Of course the manager was called to help and despite not being at the table or on any call claimed that he had expert knowledge of the interactions! His job seems to be to just deny any statement I made about what had occurred. Anyway, nice new clothes (the brand new if mostly deserted showroom) but the same old stereotypical used car dealer tactics sadly. My advice is pin them down and don't accept anything from Dawn or the shaft manager without an 'in writing' breakdown before you arrive for the paperwork. At the time I simply assumed that their reluctance to give me a sales proposal in writing was in order to speed things up. Yep, we learned a lesson and wasted a lot of time..... Disappointed but not surprised as I later read from other forums that Edison Mini are well known for this. Buyer beware. More
