1965 Porsche 356

On August 27, 1965, Porsche enthusiast Dr John Burchfield traded in his '65 Renault for this brand new 356 C Cabriolet at Bud Clark Volkswagen Porsche in Dearborn, Michigan. Whether he knew it or not he had just become the car's sole owner for nearly the next six decades! For the first nine years of the car's life it saw regular usage and even more regular dealer service. In 1974, the car had accumulated just under 39,000 of its 42,125 miles and was removed from daily duty and given a quick cosmetic go-over. A few more miles went on through the 70's before being completely stripped and rebuilt from the ground up by noted Porsche restorers Jones' Autowerkes of San Antonio, Texas, in 1981-1982. Infrequent use landed the car at the 356 specialist shop Aircooled Auto in Montville, Ohio, for a mechanical go-over and a new convertible top in 2020, with the car currently in that refreshed condition.

Amazingly, Dr Burchfield was as fastidious with his paperwork as he was with the car's service, and this 356 retains every receipt and service order from the original title and bill of sale through every service visit as well as all restoration receipts and work orders from the recent refurbishment. The car even saw the dealer so often it was issued a very rare service book II because all of the tickets in the first one were used up! That original paperwork, the service books and the factory Porsche Cardex confirm both Dr Burchfield's ownership as well as the car's equipment. The engine and transmission stamps are original and fully legible while rebuilt, the numbers matching drivetrain is still installed today. Body numbers are found on the original chassis stamp and data plate in the front trunk as well as stampings on both the trunk and engine compartment lids. Even the original keys, owner's manual, dealer paperwork folio and the original dealer inventory tag are present!
