Buyer Beware: Deceptive Pricing and Classic Dealership Games We drove two hours from Wisconsin to inspect an advertised pre-owned truck at Advantage Chevrolet of Bolingbrook. After calling ahead, the dea Games We drove two hours from Wisconsin to inspect an advertised pre-owned truck at Advantage Chevrolet of Bolingbrook. After calling ahead, the dealership explicitly assured us the vehicle would be prepped and ready for a test drive upon our arrival. Roughly 40 minutes before we arrived, a salesman named Raul Rosales called to inform us the truck was actually off-site at a detail shop. Because we were already over an hour into the trip, we agreed to go with Raul to the detail shop to inspect it. The truck had only 12,000 miles and appeared to be in great shape. To save time, we decided to head back to the dealership to work through the numbers while waiting for the truck to be brought back. That is when the experience devolved into a masterclass in classic dealership runarounds. We gave Raul an initial price we were willing to pay, initiating a tedious cycle of endless back-and-forth waiting. When he returned saying they could meet our price, I noticed a forced "protection plan" added to the breakdown. I insisted it be removed, so off he went. When he returned, I spotted a separate $900 detailing fee. When I pushed back on that, he returned stating they reduced the fee, but they had quietly raised the baseline vehicle price—resulting in a net price increase of roughly $500 over what we had originally agreed upon. Exhausted from the long drive and over an hour and a half of dealer games, we reluctantly accepted the adjusted figure just to move things along, and Raul left to set up the final documents. Looking back, I deeply regret accepting that price—a detailing fee should never have been tacked onto an advertised price in the first place. We then waited another 30 to 40 minutes for the truck to return from the detail shop so we could finally test drive it. While the vehicle drove well, completing the purchase took another half hour, including a requirement to unlock our TransUnion credit report even though we were paying in full by check. Finally, we met with finance manager Tim Hosek to sign. What followed was a heavy pitch for extended warranties, followed by a rushed signing process where the final figures were glossed over completely without a transparent line-item breakdown. The following day, I thoroughly audited the paperwork. To my dismay, I discovered we were charged over $1,000 above our agreed-upon price, along with an extra $275 artificially added to the licensing fees. I have attempted to call Tim and dealership management to resolve this discrepancy, but they refuse to return my calls. I have now filed a formal complaint with the Illinois Attorney General's Consumer Fraud Bureau. If you're financing through this dealership, double-check every single line item before you sign. Their primary strategy is steering your attention toward the monthly payment figure while quietly padding the back end with hidden dealer fees, mandatory "protection plans," and shell-game price increases. Because interest rates and loan terms can easily disguise hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars in tacked-on costs, make sure you demand a itemized, line-by-line total cash price breakdown. Do not sign or rely on verbal promises until every single fee matches what you explicitly agreed to pay. More

He knew I was coming from some distance to look at specific Corvette and didn't want to disappoint me so he toughed it out and kept the appointment. He dragged the vehicle out of the showroom and into the parking so I could get look at it in the light. The rest of the buying experience was difficult as the power outage required us to drive approximately 20 minutes down the road to different sister dealership to get the paperwork completed and then back again. I have bought many cars in my life due to my profession as well as my age but I have to say that this was probably one of, if not the best, buying experiences that I have ever had. Andre was completely knowledgable about the Corvette line and was quick to pickup on how much I knew and didn't know so he could provide the right amount of assistance without being arrogant or pushy. His coworkers were equally friendly and courteous and you could tell that enjoyed their work - even in the heat and the dark. As one who rarely writes reviews whether good or bad (yes I'm lackadaisical in that regard), I felt compelled to provide this review. While I don't measure car buying experiences by how "good of a deal I got", I do measure them by how well I was treated and that I'm driving off in the right vehicle. While no one wants to get screwed over financially, every dealership needs to make money as every salesman needs to sell a call to earn a paycheck. But it's rare when someone in the industry like Andre is truly trying to earn your business and not just shoe horn you into a vehicle to make a sale. As most anyone reading this knows, car buying experiences tend to be not-so-pleasant as its time consuming and expensive given the price of vehicles these days. However, if you have to go through the process, might I suggest giving Andre and his cohorts a chance. I think you'll drive away feeling good about your choice regardless of the spend and time invested. More
