I own a 2002 "classic" Ford. - srischguard
I own a 2002 "classic" Ford. The A/C had been slowly fading overwhelming past 2 or 3 years so I decided it probably just needed refrigerant. In Nov of '23 I took the car to Gerald Ford for service where I explained the loss of cooling efficiency over the past few years. I was shocked when I got a call telling me the evaporator coil had a leak and needed to be replaced at a cost of $3000. And since they were at it I may as well replace the heat exchanger for an additional $500. I felt like I was being ripped off so I told the service rep NOT to perform the work, and that I would come get the car. He tried to tell me how dangerous it was to drive with a leak in the system. When I picked the car up I tried the A/C and it was cooling perfectly. They obviously charged the system while doing diagnosis.
Well after 5 months in FL and a couple summer months in IL the A/C is still working perfectly.
I don't know if it was laziness or dishonesty on the part of the service rep, but there was nothing wrong with the evaporator.
