It's always been pushy salesmen who seem more concerned with their commission than my satisfa Typically, I HATE shopping for cars! And I mean HATE!! It's always been pushy salesmen who seem more concerned with their commission than my satisfaction, mile-high stacks of paperwork, condescending/judgmental looks when a few spots show up on your credit, and the hassle of finding something you can afford with the bells and whistles you would like. I was literally SHOCKED at the 180-degree-opposite experience I had at Zumbrota Ford. I went to the Zumbota Ford dealership with my husband (who was completely ready, as usual, to buffer me from the sales personnel because he knows how much I hate dealing with car-buying) but from the moment we walked onto the lot, the sales staff was friendly and approachable, but absolutely NOT "in your face" about things. The customer advocate (seriously, he--and the rest of the staff, for that matter-- was so focused on us and our needs/goals for a new car, that it would be an unfair disservice to call him a "salesman") with whom we worked was down-to-earth, diligent, and incredibly informative. When we narrowed it down to the two vehicles we liked best, he took us around them, showing us all the relevant features, before each test drive so we could really compare our two finalists. The test drive was thorough, too, not some three minute "see-how-you-feel-in-the-seat" thing. We were gone for probably 20 minutes per drive, on city streets, county roads, and the highway, giving us a chance to see how the cars handled and sounded (noise level is a big deal for hubby) in all normal driving conditions. When the test drives were over, he gave us ample space and time to have an in-depth private discussion about the pro's and con's of each, and when we decided on the Ford Escape, he really went to work: speedily inputting our application information, offering us beverages, and working hand-in-hand with the finance people. And the financing advocates? Incredible!!! Again, they were ALL about getting us the best loan for which we qualified, with a combination of rates, rebates, and down payment options from which we could ultimately select. It was 8:00 in the evening, and we still got a loan approval in about 15 minutes after submitting our final paperwork! No coming back another day, no dickering with the lenders, no having to come up with more down than we could reasonably put together. I was a little flabbergasted. Moreover, the financing explanation/signing was as smooth as glass! The advocate we worked with showed us the short and long term differences in our options, and I felt like WE were able to make the financial choice, and weren't stuck with something the LENDERS were trying to force on us. It was the first time I have ever been involved in car buying where I felt like I was being treated like a grown up and being allowed to make my own, well-informed decision on loan terms. When it was time to take our new car home, our customer advocate (who probably didn't have to stay, but did), helped me clean the stuff out of my trade-in, went through all the essential operating systems, made sure I had a full tank of gas, and even let me pick out some awesome Zumbrota Ford swag for my 10-year old. During the times when we were waiting, everyone working around us were incredibly friendly and helpful. I wish I had a buck for every time someone asked if I was comfortable or needed a beverage! And the more I watched, the more I realized that every other customer in the place was being treated as well as we were. A single mom with her two young kids in tow was treated like she could have paid cash for any vehicle in the lot. An older couple was offered different seating while they waited for their paperwork to ensure they were both comfortable. A young woman, who was clearly buying her first car, had a team of customer advocates working with her--one to answer the buyer's questions, and one to answer her mom's more 'experience-driven' questions. And it struck me, as I set there, that it was not just OUR customer and financing advocates who were looking out for our best interests, it was a company-wide approach. The focus of the entire enterprise, across all staff types and all kinds of customers, was to do the best job they could to get each person that walked in their door the very best car for them on the very best terms that could possibly be arranged. And it was genuine. It wasn't forced, it wasn't fake, it wasn't for show. I never once felt like people were being nice to my face, and then snickering about me behind closed doors. Everything about every staff person with whom I interacted was real, was sincere. I am attorney; I fight for real people every day. And from the moment I arrived at Zumbrota Ford, I knew every person in there was, in a somewhat different way, truly fighting for me; genuinely working on MY behalf. And it felt great!! So, young or old, well-off or tight budget, new or used vehicle, pristine credit or a few bumps in the road, I recommend everyone and anyone considering a vehicle purchase to head to Zumbrota Ford first. You don't have to buy on the spot, but I can promise you that no matter where else you might shop, you will not feel as well-treated or respected anywhere else. And, in the end, the woman who hates--HATES--car buying had one of the most pleasant evenings of the month at, of all places, a car dealership. More important than the Escape, is that *I* was sold! More
