I purchased a 2018 BMW M5 from Woodfield Lexus for around $70,000 dollars. After signing the papers, the salesman opened the trunk and showed me the factory exhaust was in it. When I got home, I realized the $70,000 dollars. After signing the papers, the salesman opened the trunk and showed me the factory exhaust was in it. When I got home, I realized they were the catalytic converters! The next day I took the car to BMW and they wanted $3,500 dollars to install them. Then the car broke down in the middle of the road, the dash went black and all electronics shut off. It restarted and ran fine. I told the salesman and asked if they would take it back, he said they didn't take cars back and it was probably just bad gas, because that causes electrical issues. They also said they wouldn't pay $3,500 to have the catalytic converters reinstalled and I should shop for a cheaper price that they would pay. Later, I took the car to BMW and found out the ECU had also been modified and would not pass the smog check in my state. That’s another $300 to fix. Selling a car without catalytic converters is against federal law. It's against the state law to drive a car like this in IL. The offense comes under Class 4 felony in Illinois, which includes charges such as DUI, driving with an invalid license, or automobile theft. When I told them I wanted to return the car and if they wanted to avoid litigation they should take it back, they just replied, "Our user car manager said you were fine with the car when you took it. You knew it had aftermarket exhaust." I did not know it was illegal to drive, unable to be registered in my state, or would cost $3,800 to fix and register in my state! They act like they did nothing wrong because I said I was fine with it before I knew how bad it was, and now I'm just with a 70k dollar chunk of metal I cannot register/drive legally on the road. They also didn't seem to care at all that the expensive car they just sold me broke down within 24 hours. Their best offer was to take the car to presumably, the cheapest shop they could find, to have it "fixed". This is an expensive car and it should be fixed correctly at a BMW dealership. More
