Candidly, as a rule, I don’t love buying cars – especially used cars. I hate haggling and always ending up with a sneaking suspicion I’m being had when we get to the final deal. My dislike for th especially used cars. I hate haggling and always ending up with a sneaking suspicion I’m being had when we get to the final deal. My dislike for this process goes double right now, at least. I’m the kinda guy who buys his beachballs in December, and right now in the car business, it’s a midsummer beachball market. Between supply chain shortages, reduced production of new vehicles, surging demand, and now exploding interest rates, let’s just say I wasn’t looking forward to this experience. But, as much as we’ve loved her, our ’08 Corolla with nearly 200,000 on her wasn’t gonna cut it for my 20-something son who needed a reliable AWD vehicle with which to go out from Vermont to Idaho for the winter. So as they say, “Ya’ gotta do what ya’ gotta do.” (At least it was gonna be my son’s nickel on the line, not mine!) We focused in on Subarus and began hunting on his behalf. We started out going the private sale route hoping to find a somewhat sane price, but it was a nightmare. We had one lead, but the owner got squirrelly when we tried to arrange to have our mechanic look it over. We concluded there must have been something he was trying to hide from us. We finally decided we needed some kind a guarantee behind what my son would be buying, so we turned to dealerships. Let me tell you, even though we paid more for a used vehicle than in a “normal” market environment, it was the best decision we could make. Dave Conceison was great to work with. He was empathetic over our situation, acknowledged the used car market was crazy – 20%-25% premiums over “normal” – and he did his best to help us get the best deal we could. WR Subaru talks about a family feel in doing business, and we can attest that’s not just empty talk. We really felt Dave was in our corner. And we wound up in a clean, sweet little ’14 CrossTrek that is perfect for our son’s needs. But it gets better! We made the deal Saturday morning, but my son wouldn’t be able to do his part of the paperwork until the following Tuesday. That evening, I was curious to see if the online ad had been taken down yet. It was still there… for $1,231 less! Um… let’s just say that the “being had” feeling was suddenly rearing its ugly head. I didn’t tell my wife or son about it and stewed over it for the rest of the weekend. (The ad was down by Sunday.) I contacted Dave first thing Monday morning. I wasn’t really sure we’d see any price reduction – I mean, in this market, if we were unhappy enough to walk away from the deal, someone else would surely step up in a heartbeat to snag “our” car – but at least I had to get the story off my chest. Dave politely and eagerly listened. I texted him a screenshot of the ad with the reduced price. He told me he would immediately bring it to his Sales Manager, Sean Fitzgerald. About 20 minutes later I got a text explaining that because the ad hadn’t been taken down immediately, the price was automatically reduced by a timing mechanism the online listings utilize. Great… I rolled my eyes. Then I read, “We will honor the updated Saturday afternoon price by CUTTING YOU A CHECK for the difference of $1,231.” (My caps, not Dave’s.) I had to read it twice to be sure I was seeing it correctly. What an honorable group of folks with which to work! We were immensely impressed by their immediate resolution to our concern by giving us everything we could have wanted. I mean, in the used car buying process, who gets anything without having to dicker about it? We assuredly will not hesitate to bring our future car buying needs to WRS and heartily recommend that you give them a chance to earn your trust – and business – too. Thank you, Dave & Sean, for a truly outstanding buying experience. More
