Mr. Hapke called about a brand new Silver Elantra on a Saturday. I said it was available and he stated he would be coming in specifically for that car and that he'd be paying cash. Not long after our conversation, the vehicle had been sold, so I immediately called him to save him the trip. He greatly appreciated my call and I stated that we had a Certified Pre-Owned 2012 Elantra with 1500 miles on it and that it had FULL coverage warranty for 10years/100k miles, or, he could place an order for an Elantra we had coming in. He asked he could negotiate because of the miles versus a new one without miles and I said certainly. He asked about what our fees were and I told him since he was paying cash, documentation, his state DMV and Sales Tax. When he arrived, he was shown the Elantra, test drove it and wanted the TrueCar price on the pre-owned car. He was told that TrueCar pricing is for new cars only, but if took delivery of the car that day, we would honor the TrueCar price on it, including the warranty (a $2000 value alone!). The $299 Etching benefit is OPTIONAL on NEW cars. The pre-owned one already had it. When Mr. Hapke objected, we discounted the car another $299 for him. Mr. Hapke was also informed that his TrueCar pricing that he built DID NOT include accessories that come with the car such as Carpeted Floormats, iPod cable, & cargo net. The actual price was to be $17998+$399(our actual documentation fee)+$299 Etch + $299 PA DMV (estimated)= $18995 - $299 Etch = $18696, "or something like that" to use Mr. Hapke's words. He then said that he couldn't take delivery because he had only a PRE-approval from USAA for 6.9% on a NEW car. He was informed that there was 1.9%-4.9% available from Hyundai on NEW cars and 2.9% on Certified cars, if qualified. Mr. Hapke credit did not qualify. In fact, we would have wait just to get an approval and he was asked to place a deposit on the car to hold it while the approval was pending. The $99 online processing fee is only applicable had we gotten him approved. Mr. Hapke was upset because he'd have to drive his family back home in his car with a broken a/c unit and come back once we got the approval. He was also unhappy that the payments, even with the best approval, were more than he was looking to spend. The only part that I "screwed up" was not asking where he was getting the money to pay for the car. If I had known he only had a "Pre-Approval", I would told him that he wouldn't be able to drive away the same day with a new car. As for my employment history, not that it needs to be disclosed, I'll state that I'd been with this company for 3 months but have been selling cars for 10 years. I also spent 6 years in the United State Marine Corps, so I take special pride in helping members of USAA, as I'm also a member!

Customer's leasing company the held the lease on their Mazda would not allow the dealership to purchase the vehicle. We did agree to make the last 2 payments AND pay for their overmileage. Customers were adamant that we purchase their Mazda even after they were informed that their leasing company wouldn't allow us to.

We went out of our way to make sure he didn't come down for nothing. He was informed on the 25th that the car he was interested in, Red w/o Nav, had been sold. The next day, he was told we had another Red w/nav or a White w/o nav. He said he'd be interested in either of them "if the price was right". What Mr. Wilkins has left out was that he had a trade-in that was worth significantly less than he expected and THAT is the reason for his frustration. His local dealer offered more for his trade-in, but didn't discount the car as much as we had. He couldn't realize that by us offering more discount for our car but less for his car was similar to what he'd been offered by his local dealer. Otherwise, why would someone drive over an hour to spend $3000 more on a vehicle that wasn't what he wanted???

The "guaranteed" price the customer had did NOT match the MSRP of the vehicle we had on the lot. There were some accessories the customer didn't account for when pricing the Tuscon through American Express. We then offered the Tuscon at the customer's "guaranteed" price and discounted further the cost of the accessories. The issue of the remote start that comes already equipped from the factory is cheaper because a remote start that is installed AFTER the car has been built costs more to install. Part of the car has to be disassembled, remote start installed, then reassembled, therefore extra labor is involved. The "$134 rip-off attempt" was actually a $500 in free accessories deal for this customer!
