A Thoroughly Satisfying Experience Following five years of going without a motorized conveyance (to simplify my life), I decided it was time to get back on the "Superhighway." In the pa Following five years of going without a motorized conveyance (to simplify my life), I decided it was time to get back on the "Superhighway." In the past, I've owned (among many others), five or six Cadillacs, five Corvettes, several trucks, a dynamite turbo-charged 2008 HHR SS, and a multi-award-winning '32 Ford Highboy Roadster. By happenstance, I had spotted a used, white Chevy Malibu at a local "Car lot." Having always liked its redesign, I asked to see the interior. It was pretty trick, obviously ordered new by somebody who appreciated the comfort and style of an "upgraded interior package." As an aside, I only purchase vehicles that are painted white or silver (prefer white), with either a grey or black interior. I decided to do more research over the weekend and browsed (via Web) the prestigious local Chevy Dealership, which has operated in Manchester, Connecticut, for longer than I've been alive, and that's quite some time. Lo and behold, Carter Chevrolet had an (outwardly) identical car in its Used Car Inventory. I clicked through the basic Web-Site options and reviewed all the posted photos. This car had less miles than the one on "the lot," was slightly more expensive, but its interior was plain and mundane, Obviously, we did not have a "Match." I called the Dealership ( on a Saturday) and asked the receptionist if I could speak to "The coolest and classiest salesperson on the floor." I'm a guy who appreciates stylish, engaging people, so I thought I'd try to match myself up with a salesperson, rather than get stuck with "The next guy in the rotation." It was a Saturday afternoon, so after leaving a voice message with Brenda Verardi, this dear saleslady called me back on Monday, as she had other clients and scheduled deliveries on Saturday afternoon-- totally understandable, as weekends are probably busier than weekdays, anyway. Upon answering her call, Brenda and I had established a rapport in "no-time flat." And since I had a day or so to consider my options anyway, I explained to her that I had concerns over purchasing a 4-cylinder. Aside from the Cadillac CTS (V-6) I purchased new in 2007, I'd never owned anything less than a good old American V-8. I got rid of the CTS because it was grossly under-powered, and I felt that I hadn't gotten anywhere near enough car for the money I spent. I traded the CTS on a brand-new, turbocharged HHR SS. So to recap, I had a bad experience with a V-6, and a great experience with a 240-horsepower (60-hp per cylinder!), 4-cylinder. I explained my consternation with Brenda, over being conflicted owning a V-6 and being "stuck" with something with much less power than I've ever been used to. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a speeder. I'm just a "Car Guy," who's owned a 427-powered Corvette, a 396-powered Chevy, V-8-powered GM trucks, and many, many more. I've also been the Editor of Popular Hot Rodding magazine, Drag Racing USA, and Drag Racer, among others. Returning to the Carter Chevrolet Web-Site, I decided to scan the SUV inventory. Being a life-long GM guy, I noticed I'd have to amend my bottom-line cash outlay (upwards) if I was to be personally satisfied with my purchase. I scanned some of the smaller Chevy SUVs, but ruled them out immediately, as I personally feel their styling cues are somewhat "goofy." Once again, I decided to "adjust" my cash outlay, and somehow zoned in on a 2014 GMC Acadia SLT1. It was silver with a wildly-appointed black leather interior. Don't get me wrong, I've always felt this particular model line also had "goofy syling," but the impressive list of options was way longer than those of any of my Cadillacs or Corvettes. This thing is Bitchin"! Brenda graciously offered to bring it by my house, as I'm a local Manchester resident. I quickly scanned the appointments and smiled. I'd never owned anything with four Captain's chairs (plus a third-row seat), sunroof in front, moonroof in the rear, Navigation System, Back-Up Camera, heated seats, and more options to suit a king. After driving it less than a mile, I told Brenda, "You had me at Hello." My biggest concern was the fact that it had 49,000 miles on the clock. I'd never bought a three-year-old vehicle with that many miles in my entire life. I'm the type of car guy who takes care of his vehicle, takes care of his clothing, and treats his other possessions "gently." I drove my most recent Corvette, my CTS, and my HHR SS "gently," constantly monitoring the "Average Miles-Per-gallon" feature and testing myself to make it better by the day. I understand the fact that today's "Average Miles Traveled" per year, per family, has increased exponentially. However, I'm single, have no family left, and I tend to (as I mentioned) drive my cars gently. Upon doing some genuine soul-searching, I decided to "Bite the Bullet," in spite of the odometer reading and price. Sure, it's "orgasmically optioned," and I love that, however, after taking delivery, every time I walked around it, I noticed another minor dent, minor scratch, or minor defect. I understand that every U.S. citizen is certainly not a "Car Guy." So I've passed that off as mere reality. Getting back to my delivery. Brenda introduced me to the Dealership's General Manager, Robert Oles, who thanked me for choosing Carter Chevrolet as my dealer of choice. I was pleasantly surprised to receive such a warm and truly cordial welcome by all of Dealer's showroom staff. I was also impressed by the overall bright and modern appearance of such a long-standing (older) Dealership. I was fully expecting the quaint, old, wood paneling with retro Genuine Chevrolet "OK Used Car" signage. Quite the contrary -- modern, trendy, and very upscale would best describe my impression of this new-car showroom. Brenda spent (what I thought) was an inordinate amount of time with me. I felt guilty, figuring she likely had other business to attend to. But, I also must admit, I needed that extended time of delivery process, due to the aforementioned "orgasmic options list." I am wildly satisfied, and recommend Carter Chevrolet on a daily basis. I ended up spending twice as much as I'd originally targeted, but I'm happily enthused about my decision. More
