Took advantage of customers good faith. I arrived at dealership with a leased car. Described up front that the purchase of the used vehicle would be determined by how much I could get for my leased vehicle. I was prepared to walk away if they were not able to offer me enough for my lease. Subsequent to my purchase, and after providing all of my information to the dealership to settle the payoff of the vehicle, I received a bill from the credit institution stating that the debt was not settled. Come to find out, Thompson had never contacted the credit institution to speak with the dealer services department for a payoff amount. While it is true that the sales individual and I obtained an automated payoff message on a Saturday, I learned too late when I contacted the credit institution regarding the charge that there were two payoffs a dealer and contracted customer. The dealership had agreed to the customer payoff and I was on the hook for an additional $800 and late charges. In all of our conversations there was never a mention of the possibility of additional liability for me. I find it hard to believe that a dealership in this business for 90 years did not know that there were two payoffs. Ironically, I had chosen to get out of my lease through a dealership because I knew it could be complicated and I had trusted Thompson had the experience to handle the situation professionally, honestly, and competently. They failed on all levels. The credit institution advised me to get a police officer and go claim my property. Unfortunately, an innocent, middle class individual such as myself does not have the means or resources to legally fight a big company such as Thompson. I trusted Thompson to ethically and honestly handle the deal and in my opinion they failed me and subsequently refused to make it right. The credit institution also informed me that typically when such a misunderstanding occurs regarding payoff, the dealership will make it right. At the very least they could have returned my leased vehicle to me and allowed me to work with the credit institution directly. The General Manager was unbending on all counts and unwilling to compromise. I asked if he would meet me in the middle. He refused. I asked him to return the vehicle to me (there would have been no loss to him other than potential earnings on future sale). He refused. He continued to state that it had been passed 30 days. I didn't know about their failure to settle the debt until nearly 30 days. I had contacted the sales person within the 30 day window but he failed to followup with me and informed me when I did call that the payoff had been made and all was good. I appealed to the advertising message that they will pay 125% over Kelly Blue Book (I definitely didn't get that for my vehicle). In my exasperation and after multiple phone calls, voice mails, and unsympathetic conversations, I did at the very end of the conversation express my frustration by calling the GM a "donkey" and I hung up. As the phone records are evidence of our conversation, there was no profanity used in any of the conversation until the very end and the hang up of exasperation on my part. Once again, by the GM a misrepresentation of the truth. Please help! More
