On 1-23-2025 I went in for a lube, I was told I needed more done and that the threads in the oil pan had worn out. (I AUTHORIZED them to ONLY replace the oil pan). Also a transmission leak – No oil type leaks on my garage floor. (Shouldn’t I have seen a leak on my garage floor?) It took two more days to complete the work. I said I needed the oil pan to see worn out threads to verify they were not stripped. Zac, the service manager assured us that their supervisory oversight made it impossible for any mechanic to mess up the threads. He said the mechanics, which changes the oil, are mostly unskilled and monitored very closely because they could make mistakes. He implied they are monitored step by step even down to the removal of the drain pan plug and inspecting the threads in the drain pan. Zac said they replace 4 of the drain pans a year. Seems strange to me, my Honda has 350,000 miles and my Nissan has 200,000. Never had threads worn out on them? Never had oil pan threads wear out on any car I owned in my 66+ years of owning a car. With the exception of one car, ALL were higher mileage cars. His statement seemed to make Toyotas sound like real lemon with it only having 165,000 miles and that I should expect that again in another 165,000 miles. Reminded me of the 1980s Chrysler K-Car I once owned. The problems we noticed after being reassured that the supervisory oversight made errors or missing something impossible. The first thing was that the “free car wash” was not done. The second was that they had failed to properly close the hood, when I was half way home, on the highway, and driving at highway speeds the hood popped open to the safety latch. This could have caused a lost hood, an accident or perhaps killed someone. Third, the maintenance required system had not been reset. We had to do that since we live 100+ miles from Teton Toyota. That took almost two days to fix. After texting, calling, and leaving messages on their web site and waiting for about 8 hours, they sent us incomplete instructions about how to do the reset. I wonder what else they missed, like the tire rotation, is the car missing a couple of bolts on the oil pan and was the correct torque used etc. When I looked at the drain pan, they had installed an UNAUTHORIZED oversize drain plug in the drain pan which they also charged me for. Doing that made it so I could not inspect the threads to see if they had been stripped. Why did they do that? Was Teton Toyota trying to cover something up like stripped threads? I think it certainly could have been. I found charging me for an UNAUTHORIZED oversize drain pan plug showed just how classy they were. I feel Teton Toyota is trying to take advantage of me because I am an older man and I’m not all that savvy about cars. They state they have “strict procedures.” Right, None of this would have happened if that was the case! Before hand, I told them I wanted to inspect the threads on the pan to make sure they were not stripped. Why did they put a oversize drain plug in if not a cover up? If they cared my safety why didn't they contact me when they first heard the hood had not been not shut? There talk certainly sound sweet but their actions are certainly not. More
