I purchased my Hyundai Elantra that same day knowing that I would be able to work with the same people in the service department that I have trusted for over 11 years. I received excellent customer service from the two sales reps and I would refer any of my friends to them without hesitation. What I thought would be a stressful event turned out to be an easy process. More
Dishonest Liars I've been buying cars for fifty years. Buying from Car Dealers is usually a miserable experience and, for the most part, I've found them to be, sleazy I've been buying cars for fifty years. Buying from Car Dealers is usually a miserable experience and, for the most part, I've found them to be, sleazy, dishonest, and liars. Such liars that, even being caught in a lie and called out to their face, they remain completely unfazed and continue with their patter. However, the last three cars that I've purchased have been very pleasant experiences and I started to revise my opinion of Car Dealers. Nevertheless, I do carefully research Yelp, Google, and similar review sites for car dealers. Team Superstores is one of the California Mazda dealers that I vetted that had excellent reviews and contacted about purchasing the newly released Mazda MX-5 (Miata). These are coming to the dealers in dribs and drabs. In early July I spoke by phone with Sales Associate Billy Ross who excitedly told me that they had just gotten two cars into the dealership, I told him the specs that I wanted and he said he'd check while I stayed on the phone. He reported back that the cars were pre-ordered and spoken for (as I had suspected, those were, usually, the first cars delivered). I thanked him and crossed Auto Nation off my list if their sales people were so clueless. Imagine my surprise when I received a phone call from Mr. Ross August 7th, telling me that they had just received two more MX-5s that were for sale and asked me if I was interested. He told me the models and colors and one was exactly what I was looking for. He e-mailed me photos of the car and I told him that I wanted to buy the car for cash if the price was right (other California dealers were selling the car for MSRP but I did not know if that was Team Superstore's policy). On August 8th he e-mailed me that "the boss is working two car deals right now but he knows to work me up some numbers so can you give me 15-20 minutes?" I immediately responded: "Billy, Let me know the price, what type of payment (cash) that you want, and what the delivery arrangements will be. Also, we are entitled to a loyalty rebate as we own a '04 Mazdaspeed Miata." I received no e-mail response so called him the next day and he told me he hadn't gotten back to me because he'd been so busy the day before. He also told me that he didn't think the loyalty rebate applied to the new MX-5s but I assured him that it did and we discussed the proof necessary for the rebate, a copy of title or registration. I then received an e-mail with the price, to which I responded that I'd be faxing a copy of the title. Which I immediately did. In the e-mail confirming that I'd sent the fax I asked him for the VIN number of the car we were referring to so that I could reference it in our correspondence. He e-mailed back : "Ok will do. At lunch now give me about hour." A little over an hour he e-mailed the reply:"Only have 12 numbers I need 17". I thought it odd that they couldn't read the VIN on a car in their possession but didn't question it thinking the car might be in the shop being detailed. During our phone conversations we had discussed the arrangements for sale to an out-of-state customer and he told me that I could pick it up at the dealer and under a California special permit could drive the car out-of-state. Alternatively, the car could be delivered to Reno and I would not have to pay California Sales Tax. I told him that I would prefer delivery and asked how that would be done. He said he'd do it as he'd lived in Reno and still had friends there. Getting no response the rest of that day and the next, I sent him an e-mail questioning the reason for the price quoted as I had checked with two other California dealers and they quoted the same, different, price which was $335.00 lower. Again I got no response. Three days later, still having gotten no response, which I thought very strange from a car salesman normally eager to close a deal, I sent him an e-mail with a copy of an e-mail that I intended to sent to his General Manager if I did not here from him. He immediately called me and said that he hadn't contacted me because he thought that the higher price meant that I wasn't interested in the car. I told him, no I just wanted to know the reason since it wasn't MSRP. He told me that that was the price his Manager gave him and that he couldn't ask the Manager about it because the Manager was gone for four days. I asked him if the General Manager could address the issue and he told me that he could and it would not be a problem if I contacted the General Manager and asked for his help. We also discussed how soon he could deliver the car and, when pushed he said it could be done the next weekend. I then e-mailed the General Manager, Sean Shahid: "Mr. Shahid, I have been negotiating with your Sales Associate, Mr. Ross, the purchase of a 2016 Mazda Miata GT (correspondence is below). My understanding since my initial contact with your dealership in mid-July, was that you would be selling the Miatas at MSRP, as are all the other California Dealerships with which I have contacted. As a result, I questioned the amount quoted. Mr. Ross spoke with me and told me that this was the figure that his Manager gave him and that he was unable to speak with his Manager to determine the reason for the difference because the Manager is out of the office until Friday. I do wish to complete this transaction as soon as possible in order to enjoy the car in top down weather. Mr. Ross told me that you would be able to establish the purchase price, hence this e-mail to you. I thank you for your anticipated assistance with this transaction." _______ He replied: Dear Mr. _______ Thank you very much for letting me know. I just spoke with Billy Ross, I guess he took a picture of a different car and the Miata that you want is still in transit and sent it to you. I have no problem honoring the MSRP plus taxes and government fees . in the morning I van look to see exactly where this unit is. Once again thank you for your patience, as you know these cars are worth the wait. Kind regards, Sean Shahid At no time was it ever mentioned that we were discussing the sale of a car other than the one just received and photoed for me. And the morning has come and gone with no further communications from Team Superstore. It's clear to me that they were keeping me on the hook in case another buyer backed out of his/her commitment to buy the car. More
