Volkswagen dream tainted by experience Just to start out, I don’t think there is a bigger Volkswagen fan out there, especially for the Beetle. I first got into Beetles at 9 years old becau Just to start out, I don’t think there is a bigger Volkswagen fan out there, especially for the Beetle. I first got into Beetles at 9 years old because of a videogame called, “Beetle Adventure Racing.” Since then, my dream car has always been the Beetle. Every store I have walked into since, I always start by going to the toy car section to see if there is a Beetle that I can add to my collection. It is well over 250 now. Offer me a Porsche, Lamborghini, Viper, you name it- in my mind, the Beetle out does all the others. One day on my way home from work, I heard the Dave Strong VW radio ad about 30% off msrp. That ad stuck with me so I decided to look at the website. I saw that a Black 2017 Beetle was going for $16,700 and decided that it was time to talk to my wife about sacrificing to make this dream a reality 20 years later. Lora and I talked with a guy at Southtown Volkswagen and the sales rep said we could get the Beetle for an $18,200 cash price. We almost went with it, but knew our budget was tight, so we went to Dave Strong VW. That night, the black Beetle went down to $14,700, so this seemed really possible. I called ahead while I was at work and our sale’s rep, Jackson Strong, answered. I told him we wanted the Black Beetle and that we would be in later to get it. He said he would hold the keys. I couldn’t even focus at work because of the excitement I felt for the possibility of getting a Beetle. At 5:00, Lora and I drove to Dave Strong VW. When we got there, Jackson met up with us and he gave me the keys to go for a test drive. I had chills all through my body as the adrenaline kicked in. It was more than I dreamed of. When we got back, it was time to talk about the payments. With a $14,700 price and our $7,000 down payment we had with us, we were expecting month to month payments to be around $150. Jackson let us know that the $14,700 price is only if you trade in a car, so it was discussed that the $16,700 price is what we could get it at. We were okay with that because that is the price that originally had our attention. After going back and forth several times, we settled on a $205.00-dollar payment a month for 84 months. In the documentation room, we added the 6 year bumper to bumper warranty for an extra $27.00 a month. Everyone seemed really good to us and we were extremely pleased with our service. Jackson Strong even bought Lora, who is pregnant, a baby girl outfit with a Beetle on it. We couldn’t be happier. For the next week, Lora and I showed the Beetle to everyone we knew. My brother decided and was making plans to trade in his Civic for a Beetle because he loved it so much too. I took naps in the Beetle, would get up in the night and look at the Beetle in the garage, etc. Yes, I love Beetles that much. Six days after owning the dream car, the loan amount appeared on my bank account. The payoff amount was $16,500. I was sick when I saw this because I knew there was a mistake. There was no way that we bought a $16,700 car with a $7,000 down payment, only to have it come out to be $16,500. I then went to the papers that Dave Strong VW gave us with our purchase and the top line cash price of the vehicle was $19,200. I told Lora that it must have been an honest mistake by Dave Strong VW and that they would fix it. I then started to read reviews online about dealerships and how it is a common trap for car salesmen to focus their customers on month to month payments so that they forget the cash price of the vehicle. I thought, “No way would Dave Strong VW do that, they are different. I want to believe they are different.” I couldn’t sleep, so I gave Jackson Strong a call, it went to his voicemail. He didn’t return the call, so Lora and I went in and he wasn’t there on a Thursday, so we went in the following day. When we got in there, I tapped him on the shoulder and told him we had some questions. He was busy making a sale, so Lora and I waited for 150 minutes before we approached him again. After explaining our situation, he told us that price was only for the lease to own option. We explained that we had the $7,000 down payment and could have easily used that for the $350 a month for 4 months and then bought the Beetle for the price- which in turn would have saved us thousands. We wish that had been explained better. We also told him regardless, we verbally agreed to a $16,700 price and he told us sorry, but there is nothing he could do about it and thought we only cared about the month to month pricing. With so much time wasted, Lora and I instantly regretted not making our purchase at Southtown VW. The hard part about all of this is that Volkswagen and their Beetle is not just a car to me, it means so much more. It was a hard thing to feel like I was living the dream way up high only to be dropped by the sale’s trap that I read about online. I would advise anyone who is drawn to Dave Strong VW by their seem-to-be-to-good pricing to explain every step of the sale and ask for clarification before committing. Also, make sure you see it on paper, because Verbal agreements don’t matter to this company if it gets them more money. I am deeply concerned about this place entirely and so we are choosing to forego our Warranties here and take our car servicing needs elsewhere. While I do love my Beetle, we are considering this to be our first and last VW purchase. More
