We took our 2001 4Runner to the Sport Durst body shop (Sport Durst Automotive Group, http://www.sportdurst.com) because they were recommended by Progressive Insurance (our carrier). We were told that any (Sport Durst Automotive Group, http://www.sportdurst.com) because they were recommended by Progressive Insurance (our carrier). We were told that any work they performed would have a lifetime warranty. This was the start of several-years of HELL dealing with these IDIOTS! It's hard to describe how poor their work was. We had relatively minor repairs to the front and rear of our vehicle. The front repairs included replacing the bumper and aligning the grill to the bumper. Initially they installed a bumper that was at least 3-inches too wide for our vehicle & apparently thought we wouldn't notice! Once they installed the Toyota bumper that fit, aligning parts was another matter, something that meant multiple "bring-backs" and was never fully aligned. Our back-hatch was dented where the lock is mounted & the lock & latch didn't work right. They told me they replaced the plate in the center of the hatch & the lock hardware. When we picked up our vehicle after multiple returns for the front-end repair, we ASSUMED the back tailgate was fixed properly because the dent was gone. We were leaving for vacation the next day so we packed for the road & left. The first time we tried to open the back window, we found it opened but wouldn't close. Eventually (going down the interstate) I got it to close. We didn't DARE open it again on our vacation — not even when a customs officer asked me to open it. When I tried to open the back hatch on our trip it wouldn't open. THANKFULLY, when we arrived at our destination I was able to get the hatch opened to get everything unloaded. When we got back we took the 4Runner back in and were told the window mechanism "came loose" or was never properly put back in and that the lock mechanism "came loose". Soon thereafter the tailgate wouldn't latch and the lock mechanism tipped to the right when a key was inserted so I took it back to find out why. I was told several screws were left out during the last repair. This "fix" lasted just about long enough to get off their lot. By now I lost count of how many times we took the vehicle back to have things fixed that were supposedly already fixed. Now, several years later, we were getting another vehicle fixed & I asked the body-shop manager about once again taking our 4Runner in because the lock was still tipping to the right when a key was inserted. He assured me this would be covered under the lifetime repair guarantee, so I told him I would bring the 4-Runner in again to see if they could finally fix it right. The lock mechanism actually fell inside the hatch the morning I was taking it in. He apparently had a technician check the hatch & told me the plastic plate that holds the lock in place had been broken where one of the screws went through it & the part alone would cost me over $200. I told him this shouldn't cost me anything since they were the only ones to ever have the hatch apart so they were the only ones that could have broken it. He said that must have been when the previous manager ran the shop so he couldn't help me. He told me the best he could do was that he put the lock back in place with some glue, but that that wouldn't hold long and that we shouldn't use the lock. SO MUCH FOR THEIR "LIFETIME GUARANTEE"! The hatch immediately started hanging up so it wouldn't latch. This required dismantling the hatch & wiggling the mechanism so it would work. (This was the first time I had seen the inside of the hatch and I immediately saw where several screws were missing from their various “repairs”.) After the third time this happened I took the 4Runner back to Sport Durst and gave them a simple choice, repair the tailgate or I would take it elsewhere for repairs and sue them for the costs & damages. I was then told by Christy Powers (Body Shop Estimator) that the mechanism had simply worn out & the only "fix" was for me to pay to replace the entire latch mechanism. I reminded the her that we had been through this for several years and nothing was worn out. Each time the hatch needed repairs it was shown to have been something THEY DID that caused the problem. I once again said that they had the choice of fixing the hatch right or I would go elsewhere & sue. Jimmie Ferrell, the Body Shop manager told me to go ahead and sue. I left & immediately went across the street to Durham Toyota. Their technician found that when Sport Durst glued the lock mechanism in place, they bent the latch linkages, which is why the latch wasn't working. They confirmed that nothing was worn out. Once they straightened the bent linkages it worked fine. Looks like I need to sue Sport-Durst, but first I'm warning others to avoid dealing with them! GO ELSEWHERE FOR YOUR BODY WORK AND REPAIRS! Ricky Copelin made the transaction easy. He was not pushy, allowed me the time to ask any questions that I had an explained the process thoroughly.
