On 4-20-22 I contacted Serra Chevrolet about a 2017 Mini Cooper Clubman that was listed via an independent website. I was able to confirm that the vehicle in question was still available for purchase and ma Cooper Clubman that was listed via an independent website. I was able to confirm that the vehicle in question was still available for purchase and made an appointment to see it and do a test drive. I previously acquired a preapproval from a lender. I arrived and was promptly greeted by a sales person and asked for the salesman I had originally communicated with via text. I was shown inside and welcomed warmly. We filled out some preliminary paperwork and prepared for the test drive. The Cooper was pulled up from the back of the lot. It was very dirty inside and out. I had already viewed the carfax and was aware that it had been involved in two accidents (minor damage to the rear end and a sideswipe to the drivers side that was considered moderate damage). The salesman said that he didn't know that. I wasn't expecting a five year old car to look new but no effort was made to clean it. The repairs were shoddy at best. There was a very obvious crack in the passenger side door (not the drivers side as the carfax stated) from a previous repair, (I have pictures) which led me to rubbing off some of the dust and pollen to get a better look at the paint on other areas of the car. There were sanding marks and rough paint finishes on almost every major panel, on both sides and the hood. The chrome finish at the top of the hood at the windshield didn't line up with the chrome on the side panel. Still, I wanted to drive it. The car was running and I was told that it was showing low tire pressure on the display. Not phased, I told them that mine do that from time to time and I was assured that they would address the issue. The tires looked good and we left for the test drive. It handled very well, no pulling either way which was reassuring that it didn't have any alignment issues from the side swipe accident. The car rides pretty low and it didn't handle potholes well. Still, it's a different animal from what I am used to driving so I'm thinking that maybe it's just the nature of the beast. It would kind of shudder at takeoff which wasn't too concerning at first, because again my car doesn't have the feature that shuts off the engine at a stop. We arrive back at the dealership and my daughter and I are walking around it, checking out the different features. The extent of the repairs on the car had me a little leary. I told them (salesman and finance manager) that I really wanted my husband to look at it but it would be the weekend before he could make it up. We live over an hour south and my husband works and hour further south of where we live, so driving up after work was not really an option. The finance manager said that I could take it home to let him see it. I was so excited to be able to do that and was thankful that they were so willing to accommodate our situation. They pulled it into the shop to check the tire pressure and then took it to put gas in it so I could drive it home. While I was waiting for them to bring the car out the finance manager come out and said that the loan company approved me and that she was able to get my payment where I wanted it. I drove it home without incident (the low tire pressure light was still on but was assured that the system was just resetting and it would go off, which it did. I get home and my husband immediately liked it, until he gets a better look. We go over the damages and after awhile agree that maybe this isn't the car for me. I took it out for a drive a little later to the grocery store. On my way home a notification came across the display that the cruise control had malfunctioned. I turned off the cruise and continued home. The agreement was that I would bring it back the next evening as I had a 12 hour shift that day. Upon leaving the parking lot I went over a speed bump at a crawl and it sounded like the engine was going to fall out. A little shaken I still drove it back although I considered having them bring me my car. When I returned to the dealership I went inside and found the salesman. I told him that I didn't feel good about purchasing it. He seemed irritated and said "so your telling me you don't want me to fix anything, you just don't want it." I said yes. He said that he needed to go talk to his Manger. He returned with another gentleman who introduced himself and asked me to list my concerns with the car so that they could be addressed by their service department. I was asked if there was anything on the lot that I might be interested in. I said that there might be so we went to the lot and looked. Ultimately nothing on the lot worked as far as size and price range. I assured the salesman that I am in no hurry, and would have a hard time coming back frequently to see new stock due to my work schedule and the distance that I live from the dealership. I gave them an idea of what it was that I wanted and that I would look on their website and let them know if there was anything that I might like to test drive. I set an additional appointment to come back before work on the following Wednesday to look at a few things. That night and the next morning I browsed the website and found a few that I would be interested in. I made note of them and would let him know the next day. I go to work at 4:30 am and have several hours to think before the dealership opens. Realizing that I had not been told the terms of the loan I had been approved for I figured it would be a good idea to find out what they were before I continued. It would be a lot of wasted time in the end if we didn't agree on terms from the beginning. I messaged the salesman and asked about the terms so I would know how to proceed, if at all. The resulting messages in response to my inquiry were appalling. I was basically told that I "just need to come up here and pick something." That I was approved "by the grace of God" and I needed to decide what I wanted to do. (I have screenshots of these messages). I sent a lengthy text back explaining to him that I just didn't want to waste time rushing around looking and ultimately end up with something I don't like (which is my current situation with my last car purchase, not from this dealership) I am in no hurry, my current vehicle runs well and suits my needs, I just want something different. The salesman told me to contact the finance manager directly, which I did. I forwarded my original message to her along with a further explanation of my circumstances and received no response. In a nutshell, my credit is terrible. I knew that before going in. Regardless of my credit score I don't feel like I deserved the treatment I received. I'm not here to get anyone in trouble, that's the last thing I want. I was trying my best to be accommodating and respectful of everyone's time. My time outside of work is very precious to me and I believe most people feel the same. So what good does it do to spend all this time looking at cars that I won't end up buying if the terms are not agreeable. My last car was purchased through Carvana, I was in a hard spot and needed to find something quickly. I didn't have time (like now) to go all over looking at different dealerships. The process was so easy, the terms were upfront and I knew exactly what I was getting, and when I could expect delivery of the car. I currently have a preapproval from Carvana as well as another lender. I just wanted to take my time and look around. I have a very good car currently, I just wanted time to look before I made a decision. Maybe online car buying is the way to go. The whole process at the dealership was entirely disappointing for everyone involved, and I'm no closer to buying a car that I love than I was when I started. More
