December 5, 2019 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing December 5, 2019 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to share a deeply disturbing experience my family and I had at Scott Robinson Chrysler D December 5, 2019 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to share a deeply disturbing experience my family and I had at Scott Robinson Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Torrance, CA on November 27, 2019 while shopping for a car for my husband. Currently, we own a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, a 2013 Dodge Durango RT and my husband’s baby, a 1970 Dodge Charger. We’ve also previously owned and leased 2 Dodge Chargers and another Durango. All that being said, we are clearly a Dodge family. Months of online searching lead us to a beautiful 2015 White Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat RWD with red suede interior. The price listed was $40,722, well within our budget, and located at the Scott Robinson dealership in Torrance. After a week of discussions and communications between my husband and a salesman at the dealership named JT, we decided to make the drive from Woodland Hills to Torrance after work. After driving for over an hour and a half with our 6 and 8 year old daughters in tow, we were excited to finally see the car my husband had his heart set on. Initially, I remained in the car because our youngest daughter had fallen asleep while my husband got out to look at the car we were there for. A salesman, Conner, approached and my husband let him know that he had been in touch with JT for a week and was interested in seeing the Challenger. Although I was in the car, I could immediately tell by my husband’s body language that something was not right. Conner would not show my husband the car without first running a credit check. After stepping in, Conner repeated this to me, claiming that it was company policy. After asking to speak to the manager and that he allow my husband see the inside of the car, he retrieved the keys. Throughout the interaction his demeanor and unnecessary statements made it clear that we were dealing with racial profiling. My husband is a 6’6” black man and I am a white woman. Had I been the one asking to see the car, I am positive this simply would not have happened. I approached manager, Robert Gray in his office and explained that in all our shopping and years of car purchases I’d never heard of such a policy. Mr. Gray doubled down on Conner’s claims of company policy. The lack of respect and blatant racial profiling was disturbing. After leaving the dealership, we were able to get in contact with JT via text message. I relayed what had happened. JT was clear that the excuse of a company policy requiring a credit check before showing a car at the dealership was not at all accurate. His exact words were “WOW!!, WHAT!! That is not our policy at all.” Upon hearing this, we drove back to the dealership. I alone got out of the car and went to speak with Mr. Gray, the manager. Suddenly the story started to shift. Absent were claims of needing to run my husband’s credit prior to showing him the car. At this point, the damage had been done. We were left feeling uncomfortable and having to explain to our eldest daughter what was happening and why. Although I repeatedly asked that Mr. Gray have his GM or boss contact me after the Thanksgiving holiday, all I could get him to commit to was a call from himself on Friday, November 29th. I have since not heard from Mr. Gray or anyone from the dealership. The car is no longer listed online and I can only assume it has sold. This is not about the car though. This is about customer service and treating people with integrity. The Scott Robinson dealership failed in a big way I am very disappointed with my family’s entire experience at your dealership and to think that my husband was treated poorly based upon his skin color puts a distaste for Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in mind. More
