Disappointed in recent maintenance to my Pontiac G-6 In August of this year, while on a trip to Washington State, my engine warning light came on. Simultaneously, my A/C quit working and my engine coolan In August of this year, while on a trip to Washington State, my engine warning light came on. Simultaneously, my A/C quit working and my engine coolant gauge registered at the low end of the scale. I stopped at an O'Reilly's Auto Parts store and checked the error code. Their computer read, "Engine coolant temp is too low." Because the coolant level, in the reservoir, was on the full mark, and the heat from the heater worked fine, I didn't worry. I suffered through my remaining vacation weeks without A/C, however, returning to Surprise without any other issues. Two days after returning, the engine warning light went out, the A/C began operating again and the engine coolant gauge was again reading normal. During the next two months, the problem came and went, indicating to me, an electrical or a possible mechanical issue. About October, During a tire installation at Sand's, I asked my rep. what the cause might be. He suggested the thermostat was intermittently running open, causing the fan to run continuously, keeping the engine coolant "TOO" cool thus preventing the A/C from operating.???? I let the intermittent problem continue until early November. At that time, the engine warning light came back on again. This time, the A/C continued working and the coolant gauge also functioned. I went to Auto Zone to check the code. Their computer said Thermostat. I bought a thermostat, thinking I'd change it myself. Too many hoses and not enough room, I called your garage to request a mechanic change it out. I should mention at this point, I had never lost any coolant, or had to add any. I took my car into your garage and dropped it off. I also requested a check on a minor oil leak I was having. The next day I was told my radiator was the problem. I was told it had a major leak and required replacing. I disputed this, because I had been driving since August, perhaps 2500 miles, with no loss of coolant. My rep spoke to the mechanic and was shown the leak. I told my rep that the radiator was installed just four years earlier, by the General Motors collision shop at Arrowhead. Now it has a leak? (I think the mechanic applied too much pressure, causing a weld or seal to blow.) I gave the go ahead to replace the radiator, change the engine seal and the oil pan gasket. Upon leaving your garage, I noted a whistle coming from below the driver's seat. (Exhaust leak) I went to the airport to pick up my son. While there, my engine warning light came back on, The A/C quit working and the temp gauge was registering on the low end. Obviously by now, I am positive I was sold a bill of goods on the radiator. I returned the car the next day for repair. I asked them to check for a coolant leak as reddish drops of fluid were on my garage floor. The mechanic told my rep the exhaust leak was due to a bad gasket, that was leaking when I brought the car in for repairs, on the previous visit. (Why did he reuse the gasket if it was bad? I just spent $2100.00 for repairs. Why didn't he tell me I needed a new one? I was told I didn't have a coolant leak. It was a leaky transmission gasket. (This gasket was replaced about four months earlier, by Sands.) I was also told the problem with the engine warning light was an air bubble. (I thought this was a closed system. How could an air bubble cause the same issue I had back in August? I picked up my car the next day. My son was with me. He said, "I smell hot coolant. You're losing coolant." When we returned home I looked at the reservoir. It was down about a half inch, from full. I marked the reservoir with a sharpie. We went shopping. When we returned, the coolant was down another inch. I called Sands and made another appointment to have it checked. After leaving the car for several hours, I called and was told there was no leak. I picked up my car and returned home. My son began checking under the hood. The coolant level was down to the bottom of the reservoir. He began checking hoses. He found the lower radiator hose clamp had never been tightened. I have several issues with maintenance performed on my car. 1. I believe your mechanic caused my radiator leak. 2. For whatever reason, the mechanic didn't bother to check his work, for coolant leaks. 3. I believe the shoddy maintenance practices, at Sands, caused me to spend money I didn't have. I think the Sand's Director of maintenance should do a thorough inspection of his work force, and insure customer's auto parts are not being arbitrarily damaged by shoddy practices. It makes me wonder if they receive a bonus for finding "BAD" parts. My confidence in Sand's garage repair capability, has been shaken. I'm not sure I will return for future work. The above complain has nothing to do with my rep, Matt Morzella. He took the mechanics word as gospel. Tom Martin More
