Route 46 Mitsubishi responded

Dear Gary, I'm sorry that you feel this way about your experience here at our dealership. You obviously did all of your homework by going through Truecar. And you found the lowest price possible on a brand new Mitsubishi vehicle here at Route 46 Mitsubishi. We pride ourselves on having the absolute lowest pricing on new Mitsubishi vehicles in the entire area, bar none. You came in with your printout and we were more than happy to honor it. That being said, there is no doubt in anyone's mind that you were getting the absolute best possible price for the new car you were looking for. I can understand and appreciate you saying that the Tacoma left by your late uncle has 'sentimental value'. I really can. But the fact that you're accusing me of being cold-hearted after you meticulously calculated what your said 'sentimental' vehicle was worth is the real kicker. I didn't offer you $18,000 because I was trying to pad anyone's pockets. I offered you $18,000 because the vehicle you brought to us was a 2013 Toyota Tacoma, 4 cylinder, 2.7L engine, two-wheel drive pickup truck. You're correct that the 2013 Toyota Tacoma is not able to be valuated for trade-in through Kelly Blue Book currently, so I also did a search on a 2012 Tacoma of the same build, just like you did and the trade-in range is between $11,448 - $13,998. We also did a VIN check verification to make sure that we had the right vehicle, as well, just so there was no confusion as to what you were asking us to buy from you. Quite frankly, you wanted much more for your uncle's Tacoma than it was worth and, much like how you were not going to buy my vehicle for more than what it was worth by going to Truecar, I was not prepared to buy a car from you for more than what it was worth either. That doesn't make any practical sense. The other thing that doesn't make sense to me is if you felt like my Outlander Sport drove like a 15 year old Kia Sportage, why would you even entertain a counter-offer on your 'sentimental' trade when you had your heart and the Subaru dealer's appraisal of your uncle's Tacoma range printout (which started at $17k) set on getting the Subaru that you had seen an hour earlier? I have a sister, too, and if she told me that she had absolutely hated the way a vehicle drove, that would be that. Ultimately, the vehicle was for your sister and she told you during the test drive that she preferred the Forester while downtalking the Outlander Sport in front of my salesperson. At that point, why would you even continue negotiations on something that would not satisfy what the primary driver was looking for? Could it be that the Outlander Sport has a switchable All Wheel Control drive system that gives you the versatility of being able to switch between a fuel-economy saving two-wheel drive mode and an inclimate weather handling All Wheel Control mode rather than Subaru's Symmetrical All Wheel Drive system which forces you to stay in a not-so-fuel-friendly mode that drives all four wheels all the time? Or could it be that the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport gives you a 10 year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty compared to Subaru's 5 year, 60,000 mile powertrain warranty? Or maybe the Outlander Sport has more standard features than the Subaru does? I can write you an endless list of what makes my Outlander Sport a better value than the Subaru Forester, but that's neither here nor there. As you stated, you would have to get a fantastic deal on the Outlander Sport to consider adding a vehicle that drove like a 15 year old Kia Sportage to your household. Bottom line, it came down to the almighty dollar and at that point when you tried to leverage 'sentimental value' into the equation I stated that the person buying the vehicle would not have the same sentimental attachment to said car, so please do not misquote me. Customer service is of tantamount importance to me and I take my Dealer Rater reviews very seriously, as anyone can see by my transactions with our customers on here. When I am in the wrong, I will take it on the chin like a man, lock stock and barrel. What we have here is not a customer service or friendliness issue, sir, and though you may describe my offer to try to give you more money as a 'pathetic' attempt to try to make a deal to 'pad my pockets', it's no more pathetic than trying to single us out because you couldn't get the money you wanted for your late uncle's Tacoma.

Dear Gary, FIrst, let me say that in no way, shape or form was I trying to be insensitive to you or your family regarding the death of your uncle. In our conversation, you brought up 'sentimental value' as a reason why you were looking to get the most money for your trade-in. I attempted to explain to you that if our tables were turned and I was attempting to retail the exact same vehicle to a dealership customer and told them that it had the same sentimental value reasoning they would pretty much tell me, in not so many words, that it would be a moot point to them. In no way was I trying to diminish or insult the passing of your uncle by explaining that, but if you feel as if I had, then I am sorry for that. Next, let me go over what exactly transpires in valuating any trade-in vehicle that comes through my doors. Your salesperson gathers all pertinent information on your trade-in vehicle and brings it to the attention of the dealership's used car manager who performs all the motions for the appraisal of your vehicle. Once your appraisal is completed the valuation is given with all supporting documentation including, but not limited to, CARFAX reports, auction results, condition reports and add/subtract option listings. As I had infored you, Kelly Blue Book, while being a standard guide for insurance company payouts on vehicle total loss settlements, is not what we or most of the industry that I am aware of use for our ultimate trade-in valuations. As far as your trade-in was concerned, the used car manager submitted his appraisal report based on everything given to him by the salesperson and that was it. You are incorrect in assuming that I offered you more on your trade because we valuated your vehicle higher. We did not. What I did was attempt to secure a deal based on what you identified as the deal-breaker: your trade-in. Mind you, I have a responsibility to SELL cars and am given some override latitude on a trade-in to secure a deal, but, on the same token, I also have a responsibility to my company that by going over that amount would be fiscally irresponsible. If I were to cross that line, then I would undoubtedly have to show myself the very same door that you are saying I should be escorted out of. The old Catch 22 - Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Like I said before, Gary, if you felt like in someway that I had been insensitive towards your family's trade-in vehicle, I apologize for that as it was never my intention. But on the same token, I cannot deny the responsibility that I have to, number one, protect my company and, number two, protect my own good name. Your review has called me everything from 'cold hearted' to 'pathetic' to 'a liar' and even to go as far as to say that we were trying to 'pad our pockets'. I spent almost ten years with the Mitsubishi organization and before that served in the U.S. armed forces. As such, I respect that you have an opinion on this matter and it is your right to speak what is on your mind. But you should also know that dragging my name in the mud and calling for my expulsion does not change the fact that at the end of the day we couldn't come to an agreement based on a difference of opinion on the valuation of a trade-in and at that point it simply is what it is. Sincerely, Michael Ko Sales Manager 46 Mitsubishi

Hello, I'm sorry that we were not able to work things out to an amicable solution. As per our communications, I have addressed the issues you had with our website and have made adjustments as you had pointed out. As for cars.com, they are, much like Dealer Rater, a third-party site, that we do not have control over policy-wise, unfortunately. While I do not believe that a one-star rating is a correct overview of what a typical customer experiences at my dealership, you, as the consumer, are also entitled to your opinion of how things transpired, and I will respect that right, as much as I disagree with the rating. As can be seen from my other reviews and from the back and forth communication that I have had with you, I take my Dealer Rater rating very serious and that extends to each and every customer that passes through my doors. Sincerely, Michael Ko Sales Manager 46 Mitsubishi
