Mixed Experience We had a mixed experience at Peterson Toyota Scion, depending on with which department we were working. We had a great experience with Sales, working with David Rutherford. It was positive in both coming to an agreement on the price of the vehicle and in closing the sale with a trade-in offer. He was easy to work with throughout the whole process and even took extra effort to walk us through the complicated navigation system and technology in the vehicle, which was all very new to us having not purchased a vehicle in over a decade. This was after the sale was completed and well after their closing time when David could have easily just wanted to get home. Instead, he took the extra time to give us terrific customer service. We’d happily work with him again. Unfortunately, our experience with the F&I/Finance Department was not as positive. Jay Davis, the Financial Services Manager, assisted us in completing the sale and final transaction. He was amiable and friendly and easy to work with. However, he is either very misinformed or outright deceitful. We purchased the “extended warranty” service contract with our vehicle. He stated that we could not add one later, which we discovered is patently untrue given our vehicle was well within the 3 year/36,000 mile initial factory warranty. Also, Peterson Toyota does not offer the Toyota manufacturer Vehicle Service Agreement (VSA), the term Toyota uses to refer to what is commonly called an “extended warranty.” Instead, Peterson Toyota Scion sells one covered by Fidelity Warranty Services, a subsidiary of JM&A Group based in Deerfield, FL. We were sent home with page 1 of 13 of our contract but with no other information. Upon returning home and calling Fidelity Warranty Services to receive a copy of the contract in full, we discovered that the description of services that Jay outlined, e.g. 24/7 Roadside Assistance from any location, was very different from the actual coverage, e.g. up to $75 reimbursement for towing if the repair is covered under the policy. Perhaps more concerning is what we learned through some basic research into Fidelity Warranty Services and JM&A. Reports of consumers’ experiences are alarming and I am not at all sure why Peterson Toyota Scion would choose to sell that product, rather than the one backed by Toyota. When calling to cancel the contract we had purchased at the time of sale, Jay Davis stated that there is “no such thing as a Toyota manufacturer backed extended warranty; they are all through third parties,” which is also untrue. Toyota refers to them as an “Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement” (VSA), and they can be purchased from any Toyota dealership in the United States prior to the expiration of the original factory warranty (must be within a specific timeframe, e.g. one month before expiration). An internet search will yield dealerships that sell them at a steeply discounted price. These policies are serviced and managed by Toyota Motor North America under Toyota Financial Services. For information directly from the source, contact 1-800-228-8559 (Toyota Financial Services). We cancelled the third-party policy taken out with Peterson Toyota and purchased the Toyota Extra Care VSA policy, at a savings of over $ 1100, for an arguably better product. We did receive the refund check in a timely manner. So, buyer beware. Just know what you are buying and know your options. Luckily, we discovered this information within the 30-day period that would allow for a cancellation for a full refund. More
