This customer has an 11-year old Ford Mustang with 130,000 miles on it. On 11/8/10 the vehicle was towed in as a “no start” complaint. Dealer tested fuel pressure and fuel pump and determined the fuel pump was not operating. With the customer’s consent, the dealer replaced the fuel pump. The customer supplied a non-Ford aftermarket pump. On 11/16/10 the customer returned and stated it was “idling high” and making a “knocking noise.” Customer also wanted intake manifold looked at as cause of high idle. Dealer determined that the “Idle Arm Control” Motor (IAC) was bad and causing the idle concern. Replacing it fixed the idle. Intake was checked and is OK. (no charge to check) Dealer then had to have the vehicle 40 minutes as customer said it knocked only after it was good and hot and had been driven for a long time. Dealer determined “knock” noise was internal and best choice was to replace it due to age and mileage. Not cost effective to overhaul an engine this old. Also, new engine has 3-year, 100,000-mile warranty. Customer declined repair and took vehicle to have it done elsewhere. Dealer states: Replacing a fuel pump (in the gas tank) and the idle arm control motor (an electrical-computer system component) had no bearing on internal engine problems. Customer did not complain of “knock noise” until 2nd visit so really all we did was “replaced the fuel pump.” It is not possible for a bad fuel pump to make the engine go bad. The engine had pre-existing internal problems due to age and mileage of the vehicle.
