When I started looking for a "new to me" used car that was bigger than my current car - one with a 3rd row seat, like most I started doing my research and narrowed my choice down to really one model - the was bigger than my current car - one with a 3rd row seat, like most I started doing my research and narrowed my choice down to really one model - the Highlander. I had gone to a few dealerships to see their inventory and in every case either the car was dirty, or it had all kinds of visual flaws that they could/should have fixed, or they just seemed to not really give a darn. One "not-your-traditional" dealership that keep coming up in my online searches was Novak Motors - they had a nice looking Highlander in stock, so I figured why not, let's take a look. Well, when I got there, it was already gone (mind you, I had not called ahead... so this one was on me). While I was there though, I met Scott (Misino) who ended up showing me a really nice Pilot (it was my second choice and I asked to see it while I was there anyhow) even thought I told him up front it was not what I was necessarily looking for. Anyhow, after seeing the Pilot up close, and seeing the quality of the car - clean, virtually flawless, new parts (tires, brakes, all the wear and tear items), that evening my 11yr. old finally sold me on that Pilot and we ended up buying it - I'm still thrilled with the decision. As for cost, Novak Motors is on of those "no-hassle" dealerships (remember above when I said it was not traditional) so the price was what the price was - but actually the price REALLY was what the price was - the price + NYS sales tax + DMV registration and that's it - no delivery free, no prep fee, no paperwork fee, no fee-management fee, none of that nonsense. Also, the dealerships only offered the "advertised" rates if you financed through them; it didn't matter to Novak Motors - finance with them, your bank, heck just show up with a bank check - whatever, same price. Finally, the service contract: Most dealerships offered a whopping 30 day service contract, or one year if the car was a "certified, preowned" (which apparently at Toyota dealerships is a $1,000 up-charge). Novak Motors offered a 90 day service contract plus coverage on the engine and transmission for as long as I owned the car... 1yr., 5yrs., 20yrs. Additionally, they had extended service contracts that were priced very reasonably because the engine and transmission were already covered. For a little bit more than that certified, preowned up-charge, I purchased a 7 year, 70k mile service contract - bumper to bumper less wear and tear parts - that takes effect when I bought the car. In all, my 2017 Pilot (bought in 2020 with 25K miles) is covered until either 2027 or 95K miles, and even then, the engine and transmission are still covered after that. Okay Scott Misino - Awesome guy! Easy going, no pressure, and on the level about everything. When the price is relatively set, there's really nothing to be sketchy about. Anyhow, for me personally, I liked that he was in jeans and sneakers (still professional, but casual). I would definitely recommend him. All-in-all it was the best experience I've had buying a car. I walked out feeling like I paid what I though the car should cost based on the advertised price, and not like I just got ripped off paying three grand more than I though it should have cost after having to finance through the dealership (at some crazy percentage), pay the certification fee, pay all the other fees, and then either pay for or feel like a horrible human being for not paying for all the other stuff they try to sell you. More
